Let Us Not Forget - Memorial Day

I know many folks are looking forward to this holiday weekend. It's the start of summer and a long weekend of partying for most folks. Good food, good drink, good friends. But let's not forget the reason for this holiday. This is to remember those that have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Young men and women that proudly served our country and sacrificed their very lives so that ours could be what they are. All I ask is that you take a moment out of this weekend and reflect upon this. Think of those that gave it all, and think about those that are putting their lives on the line each and every day still. We have the greatest military in the world, and that is not because of our advanced weaponry or our training or our vast sums of money. It is because of those young men and women who step up and proudly wear the uniforms of our nations armed forces. Whether they be Marines, Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, or National Guard, they all deserve our respect and our thanks.

If possible, take just a few hours and visit a grave site and place a flag. I will be visiting Riverside National Cemetery and the Medal of Honor Memorial there.

"All gave some, some gave all"

Here are some pictures of the Beirut Memorial in Jacksonville, NC. These men were my Brothers and I will not forget them. Semper Fi.

And these are the 241 brave young Americans that paid that price on that fateful day.

This is a pretty cool site about Memorial Day. I encourage everyone to participate in the moment of silence at 3 on Monday.

Person County NC, just honored it's WWII veterans. 7 buses took veterans and volunteers to Washington DC WWII Memorial. They were escorted through Roxboro to the VA border by NC State Highway Patrol, sirens blaring. The streets were lined (7:30am) with people waving flags and saluting. Intersections were blocked off by firetrucks with firemen standing at attention and saluting each bus as it went by. VA Highway Patrol picked up the escort at the border. They got to DC and the memorial and were able to spend a few hour reflecting, remembering and honoring their fallen comrades. A small ceremony took place. Then they all re-boarded the buses and headed back South driving by the Arlington National Cemetery. It was a good day. It was all provided free of charge by the Roxboro Rotary Club and the citizens of Roxboro and Person County. My father-in-law was one of the veterans that made the trip. He will always remember that day.
