Why cut the chip out of a functioning key? Just tape the key inside the steering column cover. If you are going to leave the key in it you might as well actually leave the key in it. LOL

Seem to remember one peep that had his stock wheel made into something like you describe. Look at the post I bumped Ram SRT 10 ACR-X from Germany. Maybe someone can chime in on the company name that did that steering wheel.
Start by checking the oil level & condition. When was the oil changed last?
Amazing how many peeps overlook this.
If one or more cylinders loose compression the un burned fuel will cause a rich condition.
Check your oil pressure with a stand alone gauge. Next steps would be compression & leak...
