I'm looking for a performance alternator that can provide more amps at idle speeds for our trucks.

I've had a good history with DC Power in the past, but now their customer service has dropped; unreturned emails, full voice mail boxes, etc. They were going to make one for our trucks, but it never materialized.

I purchased one from Ohio Generator, but it's been a challenge to say the least. After 1.5 weeks to get the correct pulley on it ("our reference was wrong" - UGH), I finally get it hooked up only to find out that it doesn't put anything significantly more than the stocker at idle. Also, I now have a nasty whine.:mad::mad::mad: Still working through that with them, but I don't think it will turn out well.

So, anyone have a source for these? Idle output is critical, not high rpm output.

Thanks!!!

Never used them but heard real good things.. 110 amps at idle and they have a video to back it up..... stupid name i know but we are all used to stupid names look at 90% of our screen names

Oh don't get me wrong. I'm not knocking their choice of business name. I actually like it. That way I can say those bunch of bastards are A-okay when it comes to high-end altenators. You can bet your Venomous FATJACK on it. LOL:laugh:

Thanks - I'll check those out... Any others from anyone else?

I buy my alternators from www.Excessiveamperage.com It is a guy in Alabama.

The guy builds bad ass custom alternators and can paint them too!!!

I have owned two of his alternators (both 350 Amps) and one Ohio generator alternator.

I love his alternators because he can build them to control when you achieve full amperage. I wanted mine low RPM for dB drags. He uses different pulleys and resistances to achieve this.

Ebay has a store who sells high amp alts for our trucks.

I also used a ohio gen before, sent my factory one to them and had it respun for dbdrag.

Are you doing a system or something?

interestin:rock:

if i have been informed correctly, our/Dodge runs the regulator thru the ecm, regulateing the ground side.

so if one puts a stand alone alt. on would codes be thrown???

and ya could do away with the battery temp. sensor.

that would be great on my '91 Dakota:rock:

No system (yet) but I have an additional electric fan as well as I was considering JMB's dual electrics instead of the hydraulic one.

I've bee dealing with Tom, the owner of Ohio gen who is telling me the one he sold me is as good as it gets...

At idle, in park, with high beams, high blower, and 17A of electric fan, it' couldn't keep up. Voltage dropped to 12.6, Alt was putting out 81A.

Today, I drove the truck to see if it would "break in" - well, it got worse. I now have a new whine, and my dash voltmeter was low with only the blower motor and electric fan on, no headlights.

Going to rip it out and send it back.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: Waste of my time.

is the ohio gen a modded stocker, a plug & play replacement or one of those stand alone units?????

Plug and play replacement.

Smaller pulley is the only external clue. After he got me the right one. First one was 6 rib. Next one was 7 rib but contacted the face of the alternator. The last one fit, but now this !@#$%^....

ya think the factory hot wire, alt to batt., is big enough???

is the grounds good enough???

i've been runnin an earthin kit on red since i have had her. the kit drop the volts from 14.3ish to a real steady 13.8 & if i remember right gave me an extra 12ish amps at idle.

just a thought

Could be part of the issue, but if the stocker can do better, I tend to think not for my application.

Lots of resources to calc this out there...

I'm not sober enough to go look at what gauge it is.:congrats::beer::bandit:

From what I remember from my car audio days... most of the vehicles had a 10 gauge (maybe 8 gauge) wire for the Alt. We upgraded to a 4 gauge and sometimes a 2 gauge. On rare builds we went bigger than that.

Man thats odd, my voltage in a test like yours with headunit, hightbeams, wipers going was a floating idle of 14.5volts, mine was a good alt.

Did you upgrade your power wire running from the alt, and did you upgrade your ground wires ? run another 0 gauge from the battery and one to the ground under the hood. thats the key. the ground is where power will come from.

I am ready to upgrade everything on the truck for a system. have some old rockford fosgate punch amps and old kicker gear to install for a NOS look

but running a 12 volt idle is low for a spun out alt. Def look into getting that checked out. here is a auction I found off ebay, idle charge of 105 amps.

Well, I sent out requests to many of the suggested vendors. Excessive Amperage responded in a timely fashion every time I had a question. He's putting together a 250A with red powdercoat for me. He has to order the stator, so I'll get it in a couple weeks or so.

I'll report back once it's in.
