I am looking into putting a Viper v10 engine with the automatic tranny and I have a few questions.

How many miles do these engine/ trannys run before a rebuild?

How much would this package cost? Where would I get one?

How big are these? Much bigger than a v8?

That's a cool idea and don't let me discourage you but if it was me I'd just use the Ford Racing 521 big block crate motor. It's basically a built 460 stroker from Ford. 609 HP with carbs, rig up a megasquirt system and you'll be pushing at least 650 if not much more. It wouldn't be the same as a Viper motor but your build would be a million times cheaper and easier, I would use that with the Ford racing 5 speed crate tranny. But that's just me and like I said no discouragement! Good luck with your project

Also about your original questions, Take care of the Viper motor and don't over mod it and it will last you just as long as any modern engine. I think there's one or two guys with 100K+ miles on their trucks. I wouldn't use the 48RE, some of the really built auto guys here are going to the Turbo 400 from what I hear.... hmm...Ford truck, GM tranny, Dodge Motor.... lol sounds like a damn good truck! As far as cost it will be expensive I'm sure. One bit of good news at least is that with a 60's pickup space for the engine will not be an issue, buddy of mine had a late 70's F100 and I remember when he worked on his truck he would actually sit on the side of the truck with his feet in the engine bay while he worked.

Edit: link says 580 HP and that's correct I went back and looked at the specs again and it's 609 or SAE corrected 580

I have over 115k miles on my original engine and auto tranny. Still pulling strong. Just completed a 1200 mile road trip, no issues even with the high mileage.

I too like the idea of a big block, however it isnt a V10.

If I would put a viper engine I wouldn't get a crate one, I would get the parts out of a wrecked truck (rear end damage). It wouldn't be heavily modded (for now at least). How are the auto trannys in this? Problems?

Didn't ford have an Iron V10?

This would be cool

Pretty weak though
"The new V10 engine has three-valve per cylinder and a single-overhead-camshaft per bank. About 362-horsepower is available at 4,750 rpm and 457 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,250 rpm"

I have thought about that, but I think they are quite a bit heavier and dont give nearly as much power.

i have a complete 05 RC wiring harness minus engine harness. (headlight/engine bay/fuse block wiring, tailight/fuel pump, both doors, dash harness ect if you need it for cheap let me know. Bought it all when i was doing my harness but went with a QC automatic so didnt use any of it.
