Washington, Oregon, and Texas are considering implementing a VMT. The states in quetion are seeing a reduction in funding from the fuel taxes as more divers are buying fuel efficient cars. The VMT would tax the Chevy Volt drivers (currently not paying much fuel tax) just like the 1 ton truck drivers, reducing the incentive for buying a fuel efficient car. The notion is that all cars use the roads, so should they not be taxed the same? Yes, and no would be my answer. From a purely selfish perspective, if I were to live and work in a rural setting, I have a much longer drive - 50 miles each way - than the city dweller. I spend 2 hous a day on the roads at speeds that yield about 30 mpg (in my hypothetical accord). This also means my VMT would be based on 20k work miles each year. The city dweller who live 15 miles from work has fewer miles to travel, but gets poorer mileage and still spends 2 hours a day (sitting in traffic) on the roads. He is often travelling on interstates (paid for from federal funds). The City guys VMT would be based on 6K miles a year; 1/3 of mine. Basically, this tax attempts to offset ANY fuel effeciency attempts. That's what I hate about it. Well that, and there is no way they are going to drop the fuel tax...they will just have a new revenue stream. If you do not like the idea, let your state legislators know about it. I have a feeling that once enacted, more states are going to go that way - if they tried to do the right thing (raise the fuel tax to offset lost income), corporations would bitch about increased transportation costs. Since it will be a tax computed at inspection time, the large trucks will likely be exempt.

What's gonna be next!? Making people who ride bicycles put an odometer on them and charge them for saving fuel!?

If they decide to do mileage based tax, they are talking gps to track it. Really a pricey way when our vehicles already have an odometer. It could be checked and reported each year. My home state (WV) even has an annual safety inspection and mileage could be documented at that time.
However, the fuel tax would need to be dropped at the same time. I never really thought it was fair to pay road tax on gas use in my chainsaw, dirtbike, lawn mower, etc.

The Kingdom of Commiefornia has notified the serfs that on July 1 the State Excise tax on gasoline is going from .36 a gallon to .395 a galloon due to a reduction in fuel consumption in the state. Oh and by the way the excise tax in 2010 was only .18 a gallon.

Anyway they can suck more money out of your pocket to cover they cost of "Running" the state they will do. And the only "Running" we ever see is into the Ground.

And King Jerry Brown has Mandated that 25% of the cars in Commiefornia will be Electric by 2025.

So can you say “New Tax’s are Coming!!”

That's what Texas gets for always trying to make their own country lol

No thats what you get when you have creative politicians that run a state within its budget. They will do what ever it takes to keep our state income tax free, sales tax low, and business friendly. Besides I like the idea of tax by the mile. They still have to maintain the sames roads, you could get 100mpg it still costs the same to build the road it drives on. So reduce revenue (even through a positive action like increase fuel economey) and you will have a short fall. All they are trying to do is create a fair system that grenerates the same amount of money it was.

When is it gonna stop.. Total BS.. I welcome a revolution. Dont want anyone hurt, but gov need a checks and balance.

if they do it RIGHT...then many of us wouldnt spend an extra dime and all the tree hugger prius drivers will see a cost INCREASE.

doesnt sound so bad now :D

Well then like a Gas Guzzler tax when you buy you a car with crappy gas mileage they need to institute a Gas Miser tax for the cars that get over, say 35mpg. Or even better have them pay full price for the car without the Gov subsidies.
That would be a good start.

But stop making me pay more because you want electric and hybrid cars all over the state and you’re not getting enough fuel sales that are taxable.

I was against it at first but now the idea doesn't seem so farfetched, if they get rid of the gas tax(which is .50 a gallon at this time in my state) and charge a road tax based on miles driven it acutally comes out cheaper for some of us depending on how much they charge anything under .5 a mile I would come out ahead.

Then you run the chance of oil companies, charging that extra .50 a gallon because most people don't recognize they pay that much in tax and are just use to it.

I'll just pull the fuse to my speedo and use my phone to track how fast I'm driving. :D

No way their getting rid of the gas tax..this is just another tax repressive measure to shove it up your ass. Once it starts all states will jump on it like a dog on a bone...I agree write your politicians and tell them no!

yup, like i said, if the math is done right, it'll only make uppity tree huggers pay more.

the problem i have with it is their way they want to track it. you can FORGET putting a gps tracker on my vehicle. no way, no how.

furthermore, if in the event i gave into a gps tracker...there would be a giant, 1" thick lead dome immediately affixed over it.

You would be surprised how much info they have as far as GPS with the technology in cars already.

Isn't that why tolls were created? To repair, maintain and build new roads and hwy's?
