what kind of doctor do I need?

I've had back pains since i was (upper middle area) since i was 16(now 22)
My injury was the result falling onto my neck and never telling anyone or getting it treated. Once I turned 18 I was refered to a chiro by my baseball coach. I really never dealt with one before so i didnt know what to expect.
When i arrived i explained how i injured my self and told her where the pain is. She already where the center of the injury occured. My backpain would get so bad that I would actually lose some function of my left hands. Almost as if when retarded. She took xrays and applied like electropads which relax the muscle with a heavy heat pad on top. After bout 15mins, she then goes in the adjustment routine. by the time procedure is finished you can feel the pain go away. After about 2 days you forget you ever had a back promblem. I usually have to see her about 4 times a year. This is the only chiro i trust.
Squeak, I would start by reducing those 60 plus hours on the computer. I dont think the human back was designed to sit that long. Also as 1fast had suggested, exercise is needed. You dont need to go run a 3miles a day. But start with a simple stretching routine and move from there. A little a day, everyday goes a long way after a year.

Yeah you could do everything they said or you could take my advice.

12 pack of beer and go purchase a new Lazy Boy with massage/heat and make sure you get them young kids to deliver and set it up.... ahh back problem solved. Now you just need to get a lazy boy mounted in the Dodge... hmm.

Well I am old ! I have done many stupid things in my years and abused the shit out of my self .Then spend 20 years getting Dr's to keep me going . Treatments ,drugs and all that never did much so you live with it till I figured out I didnt want to . So spent more years looking for what I wanted to do about it . That surely was not to keep being poisoned by the AMA . I managed to find an Acupuncturist that had been a medical Dr in China and a acupuncture instructor before he came to the states. Spend 1 year working with him and now I do not need a hip resurfacing ,my arthitis no longer prevents me from working ,my vision has improved and my stress has dropped below par . I have herbs I take for my Reflux but that is slowly going away , I even repaired a hernia with moxibustion (hard punk about cigar sized used over acu points ,hot mofo ) . Thats why I dont Do Doctors or RX and feel 100 % better for it , ok I do think I took about 10 asprin over the last 5 years . There also is a down side ,much like Dr's there are a lot of undertrained acupuncturists too .
The Guys are also right on the exercise and weight loss as the body is made to carry a certain load just like a truck and over loading just F's things up and if you dont kick her round the block on occation the seals will dry out . The one most important thing is You have to want to help your self and improve the body and lessen the pain for you ,not cause sumone said to ! 60 hours in a chair will kill you spend some time on you instead of that .
Have A Kind Day

all joking caused by that title aside :D , i've had back problems (spasms, pain, etc) for the last 10 or so years of my short life. I'm currently dealing with an episode and it's darn near unbearable. Painkillers used to help, but I found out last year that I'm allergic to vicodin, codeine doesn't really work, and the ER won't give me anything much stronger than those. I'm not a fan of doctors, since they usually give bad news ;), but I'm thinking it might be time.

I'm definitely not a fan of chiros, for every friend I know that's been helped by one I know 3 that haven't been helped or have been made worse. Can a general practitioner help me, or do I need a specialist? Is it possible for them to diagnose whats causing this when I'm not in the middle of an episode?

excuse the rather left field question, but this *is* off topic and I'm stuck in bed with a heating pad so amuse me :D

Sounds like the ER has been the only entity to evaluate your back?
If so they are only going to do an x-ray to rule out a FX...and send you packing with the usual Vicodin, NSAID's, and Flexeril...with a follow up with your primary MD.

"Typically" most Neuro, or Ortho MD's that evaluate back injuries are not "too" concerned with back pain without associated neurological symptoms... burning pain running down a leg, aching hamstring, numbness to toes, loss of bladder...ect. These symptoms represent insult to the nerve(s)...possibly due to a herniation of the disc... also fluid can leak from the disc...and cause moderate irritation and swelling to the affected nerve(s).

An MRI is a great diagnostic tool that can assist the MD in evaluating the root of your problem. The MRI shows soft tissue, and allows for a much better picture of what's going on in there.

Please note: there have been control groups that participated in an MRI study....of 100 people... they all had MRI's.... it was discovered that out of the 100 people...some of the worst MRI's ended up being on people that had no symptoms or complaints....vs. some of the control group that had rather unremarkable films...but had moderate to severe pain, and symptoms... so "take it with a grain of salt".

If your doctor rushes into the surgery speech ... Get a second opinion... UNLESS your MRI has a obvious insult, and your really having troubles...foot drop, loss of bowel or bladder function , peri-rectal numbness, poor gait, neuropathy...ect.) Then it's probably one of your only alternatives...
I would still go with the second opinion.

I can tell you that I had no choice with my surgery....and while it got me back on my feet...I have more chronic issues daily (spasm, radiational pain, and numbness) than I care to explain...but that's life. I'm not the easiest on these vertebra of mine...:dontknow:

Get yourself a good MRI..and a good Neurologist, or Ortho MD.... and see what they think.... they may start you out on ESI to see if it helps...go from there. If your lucky they may get it worked out with a good physical therapist.

As said earlier...stretching is important... hell...hamstrings can pull out a back.

Once you get a baseline MRI ... they can direct you in the most appropriate direction to assist in the management of your back.

Good luck.

again, thanks all for some great input!! :D I'm gonna check my options and at least get a checkup soon :p I'm definately not wanting to rush into surgery, I'm just wanting to get an idea of what's causing it and what my options are.

Just to clarify, the 60 computer hours are work, not play ;)

Lots of good info here as I too have back issues from 20 years of slinging grease. I am gonna take Begoods advice on the stretching techinque. Its the one area I am lax about.

Squeak, take heed and try to improve your health. You can loose weight simply by making better choices and getting off of sugar. Sugar is quite the drug and most people are addicted to it. Do not start running now, it would probably do more damage than good. Walking would be good and lifting weights. Lifting weights burns more fat longer than cardio excercise. Get a subscription to Flex magazine, its cheap like $20 a year. Great info on lifting and food. I changed my body via that magazines help. I am 42 years old 6.2 210 lbs, 13% bodyfat .......Your health must be number one in life, or your done.

Good luck, and sorry if I rambled in areas you are knowledgeable in.

If you want to do a brain dead weightloss program. Attempt to clean up your three meals a day. Hopefully you eat 3 meals a day. Add brocolli to every meal you can, it's a negative calorie and great source of fiber. You should have a good idea of what to eat and not eat. Now, after you've done that, add two protein shakes to your daily routine. Start off taking 35g roughly. You can mix with milk if you have to, but try to use regular/flavored water. Take one shake during your biggest break in meals. Usually halfway between lunch and dinner, then take the other halfway between dinner and bed time. You'll only need to drink about 5oz to do this. It isn't hard and takes less than a minute to make, so no excuses on time.

If you want to make dieting successful you HAVE to have your food prepared before you leave the house. You should take your food to work and know what you're eating before you leave. Also knowing what time you'll eat. It's really easy to do, just a matter of getting in the habit. If you need recommendations on protein powders, let me know.

Might want a dose of Gas X with that regiment....

Only if your body is real sensitive lactose. Otherwise you'll be fine after 2-3 days. The first 2-3 days you'll drop some bombs, but then you'll be in the clear.

Switch to an isolate protein, you're likely using a concentrate. If you want I can send you some of the one I make to try out.
