Hey guys,

So i was driving around town and when i went to turn at a stop light i hear a loud bang as if i had a 200lb chunk of metal in the bed sliding back and hitting the tail gate. Obviously my bed was empty. I tried to recreate the noise but it seems like it only does it when it feels like it. Especially when i turn into a parking lot. Going straight is ok. No vibrations either. I wondered if its suspension related? also i noticed the differential cover is leaking. How bad? from 0-10, probably like a 6. Im getting a new gasket toady and while im down there i'll check for any damage. You guys have any idea of what it could be?

Sounds like a broken tooth on a spider gear. That's why you only hear it when turning.

My thought as well. Co-worker thinks it might be low on Oil and/or LSD Clutches binding and suddenly releasing.

The spider gears take a beating in these heavy trucks! You will find out when you remove the cover! Be prepared for some differential repair while you are in there. If you are getting the leak fixed by a shop, Take it to a diff shop so it can be fixed while it is apart.let them know what you have experienced and to have a set of splider gears ready

damn... I'll probably do the repair myself. At least i have a great excuse to get 4.56 or 4.88s

Stop driving it until you open the diff cover to inspect things. If one small piece of metal gets between the ring & pinion you will be needing 4:88's for sure. Unfortunately I've seen the ring gear push a pinion gear out the bottom of a 60 center section. It's not something you want to see on your own truck.

I replaced my spider gears myself along with my LSD packs while I was at it..

I have no idea your mechanical level, but it's a pretty easy job in my oppinion.

Setting up the ring & pinion is a whole different level of ass pain that I like to leave to the pros.

Im not pushing any vendor here, but I got my replacement parts and 4.56s from JTSVP and had the spider gears cryoed. The spider gears he provides look to be more beefy than the stock gears too..
(4.56s not yet installed so I have no comment in regard to those)

The cryo process is supposed to make the gears stronger.
I did my trucks spider gears 2 and a half years ago after busting a few teeth in the stock rear end. I have not been kind to the new rear set up and so far it's holding fine.

intersting... Yea Im pretty sure i can tackle the rear end myself. I've rebuilt the motor and replaced clutches along with the hydraulics. rear end cant be that difficult. and besides, I have you guys to help, i ma all about the learning and gaining experience :)

It is all about attitude! and you have the correct one. there are manuals available and there is alot of info on youtube. It is the only way to learn. Great self confidence builder. I had to fabricate a spreader that was required to remove the crown assembly. if you only need to replace the spider gears it will be easy. once you get the pin out spin one axle to roll the old spiders out and the new ones in, one at a time.

Yes sir. 2 of them were complete and the other was broken in half. Also it looked like a 4th teeth was about to give as well.
