Hey all

Ever since i bought my truck the serpentine belt screeches like hell whenever I wash the truck. It kills the power steering and alt until the truck turns over for about 15 seconds running. Its really a pita in the rain.

The truck has a new PS pump, new serpentine belt and under drive pulley. Didn't matter if the belt was old or new. Under drive pulley or not. Has been doing it since day one.

How can i correct this?

Not sure but mine does the same thing. Power steering does not work. Turn the steering wheel back and forth actuates the power steering in 10-15 seconds, then the screeching stops. Mine only does it after I have driving in the rain or been parked out in the rain for a period of time. Never happens while driving. :dontknow: Also all bearing are working with no problems and this has been going on for 40-50K miles so "if it ain't broke---I don't fix it."

Its probably because of the hood scoop. I wonder if there is a way to route the standing water from the hood scoop to the sides instead...

Mine had that noise, was the idler pulley

Might want to look at the tensioner.

Water coming in through the hood scoop and causing belt slip. Normal

A New Tensioner and
A Good Year 4070675 7 PK1715 Belt (This particular belt sheds water well);
I've been using one for years.

I had the tensioner replaced back in 2013. The belt is brand new. For the under drive pulley.

Hmmmm... The belt I use is by Goodyear and is their Gatorback series. I don't know if that part number is still the correct one but somewhere buried in that number should be the length and width.

You shouldn't have to be using a specific type of belt however.

Correct length, width and tension (and of course reasonably dry) and it should be working just fine. And of course no crazy resistance from anything it is trying to spin.

When I wash my truck or take it to the brushless carwash I have electrical tape in the console, 3 strips to cover the opening and the just rip it off when you are done....it's worked for me, I can't help ya with the rain though.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM IN HEAVY RAINS, FIGURED THE BLET ISNT GETTING TRACTION , IM 100% CERTAIN THAT IF I COVER THE HOOD VENT IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN , I GUESS WE WILL SEE

Pete, I'd look into the tensioner as well. I've had UD pulleys on both of my trucks and not experienced this level of an issue. If I go through a touch free car wash on occasion it will give a little squeak when I first come out of the wash but clears up within seconds. Hell I even ran a belt with one less rib on it for a couple years on my last truck (it was the only belt I could find in the right length to bipass the a/c back when I was going to the track on occasion) and it didn't even do it then.

Check that your harmonic balancer bolt is tight! it is at a loss of tension somewhere.

Take the belt off and notice how much tension the tensioner is applying.....Make sure ther isn't any oil on the belt......Take the balancer off and inspect for cracks. Check the end of the crank.... something i would do. best find the problem before it gets bigger! Cranks are not cheap or easy to find........
