Hey I'm looking at a 2004 RAM SRT-10 with 97,000 miles on it. I've read all the "major" look out for things, but How many miles do these motors last before a rebuild may be needed?

Basically is this a dependable motor?

Transmission has been replaced 15,000 miles ago.

Any info would be helpful. I'm looking at the forum now and finding some articles. Hopefully if all goes well I'll be a legit member shortly!
 
My truck has 104k. Drives great.

My truck doesn't leak oil but is sure does consume it. Always had. Makes perfect compression and pulls hard.

I drive my truck hard. Swapped in the T56, lowered it, and long tubes etc.... Drives great and is very dependable. Only left me on the side of the road twice in 7 years of owner ship. First time was my JTSVP fan line got a hole in it because of a zip tie and the second was because the upper radiator hose clamp failed.

Otherwise its a great machine.
 
These trucks are awesome and seem to last a long time. But if something goes wrong you better have deep pockets cause it could cost you.
 
Mine has 104k on it now. I did have to rebuild my motor at 70k due to a piston rod bending, not sure what caused it but it has been fine since then. Mine eats oil as well, nothing major but I honestly believe the majority of these motors just burn oil period. No oil leaks, and it only had to be towed twice.

Once when the slave went out (no gearing for the manual) and the other was when the truck blew off a coolant fan line. Other then that, it runs fine and drinks gas like no tomorrow.
 
We have members trucks on here that have lasted 100k and even 2 that are at 200 without rebuilds.

I also remember a 6k mile truck throwing a rod. They have proven to be quite the reliable motor. However when and if something goes wrong expect to spend just shy of 10k for a mild rebuild.


04 and 05 trucks have inferior bearings. They were changed in 2006 from 120 degree to 180. This helped with reliability considerably. The oil pressure relief was also changed at this point lowering the overall oil pressure.

Mine is north of 170K miles. Its been sitting the last few years. No question its been the most reliable vehicle I've owned. I had a couple items during the 36K mile warranty (rear axle bearing, power steering pump) and since then I had a water pump start leaking on me this spring, replaced clutch slave and replaced the trans output seal. I also had one ball joint get some play in it. All pretty minor. Unlike others mine has never burned any oil. I've stuck with only OEM filters and OEM spec'd Mobil 1 0-40 oil. It runs as good as it did the day I drove it off the dealers lot.
