Not the drug or plumber kind. While searching for a mystery coolant leak I found this hiding behind the exhaust manifold. Has anyone seen a crack here before? I am going to finish pulling the other head off, check for straightness, and see if this can be fixed or not. I know aluminum can be welded, but if the crack is too deep it may be better just to replace it.

Well that’s not good

What or where are we looking at ?

Under the third from the right (actually fourth but the first one is to the right of the picture) plug there is a whiteish triangle shaped trail. I think this is where the coolant has been escaping from. I found a local company that says they can weld anything so I am going to run it by them Monday. Hopefully they can determine how deep the crack is and decide if it is repairable.

That could cause a leak, shitty part , being that it’s cast aluminum, it is a bitch to weld, especially being contaminated with oils and coolant, good luck

The question is what caused it? Just an odd place to crack if there's no smoke or water in the oil it's probly superficial (as in just to the water jacket) and the make apoxy strong enough for that if done right.

Form the epoxy in the shape of a bandaid with a smiley face on it. #battlescars:rock:

Ah, if only it wouldn't be covered by the exhaust manifold.

The company that can weld anything referred me to another company. I dropped off the head this morning where he showed me his 2 40K pound rotating welding tables and a shop cleaner than my kitchen. This is probably child's play to his people. I did catch them in a lull so it gives them something to do.

Pics of the crack before welding and after as well as after decking. New seals, springs and stuff going in next.

Curious. How much was it to weld?
Do you have an estimate on the whole job >
Thanks!

The welder only hit me for $65. Tanking and decking the heads was about $145. I'm doing the rest of the labor myself. The rest of the parts (coils, wires, springs, gaskets, pushrods, etc.) are around $1K. I scored some chrome moly 3/8 pushrods (.080, 7.6 inch)off of EBay for $3 each, hopefully they are the right ones for the truck. I've found a lot of parts through manufacturer discontinued and closeouts, especially gaskets, so shopping around helps.
