I was finally able to get an alignment yesterday, when my front driver side caliper starts smoking. Luckily I was like 5 mins from my house. Pistons are seizing, time for a rebuild. I took them apart and was able to un seize the driver side but one piston on the passenger side wouldn’t move. So just decided do take them out and start the rebuild on the calipers. I was able to take them apart and degrease them today. Tomorrow I’ll get some really fine sand paper and remove the rust from the piston bores. While I’m at it, I’m going to repaint the calipers, install new pistons/seals/dust boots and do new pads/rotors. I bought my truck from Chicago 6 years ago and haven’t replaced the brakes. Then again, I’ve only driven my truck only 15,000 miles in those 6 years. I finally was ready to start driving my truck then this happens, never fails. Pictures below.
After a lot of degreaser, wd40 and elbow grease they’re ready for some paint. Most of the bores had rust above the piston seals and all of them had rust where the dust boot/seals go. Had to use sand paper and a couple of wires wheels on my drill. Took a few hours but well with it. Compared to what some places want to charge for rebuilding front calipers $899 per caliper, basically $1800. That’s way too much for me. Below are some pictures of the progress.
I plan on rebuilding my rear brakes down the road also. By any chance does anyone have an updated part number for the rear pistons? I have part numbers, but when I search it the part number is discontinued. Thanks 2004-2006 REAR CALIPER KIT (Per Wheel): 2 x 5019749AA - Boot & Seal Kit 2 x 5139916AA - Pistons
Calipers all cleaned and painted. Took all the tape off and cleaned the excess paint. Just waiting on the seals/dust boots to come in and reassemble/install back on the truck. Here are some pictures.
Still waiting on the parts for the rebuild, so decided to clean some of the stock parts. Spindle and the hardware for the caliper cleaned up really nice with my drill/wire wheels. Here are some pictures.
I Know it is upsetting when you get a problem...but finding it, fixing it and making it better/improved is rewarding. Good work
Hey you have the same shitty concrete I got. A bitch to sweep, can't roll a floor jack, crazy paving kinda pattern yep that's it
Yes it does. Im going to be upgrading pads and rotors. I was planning on doing stainless brake lines, but I don’t think it’s in the budget. I’m going to be rebuilding the rear calipers and upgrading pads/rotors as well. I’ll keep you guys posted and I’ll post pictures too.
I saw someone else's photos recently and they had the same. Somewhere out there is a really bad paving contractor lol
Rotors badly worn are they? I would be looking at a skim if not Keep up the good work and yes we are very interested. Keep posting
Yes and pretty old. I’ve never changed my brakes on the truck since I got the truck in 2014. Don’t know how long they were on there and yes the pads are pretty worn. Sounds good, thanks.
Some of the parts came in today. I reassembled the pistons, seals, and dust boots back in the calipers. Still waiting on the new pads, new rotors and new speed bleeder brake caliper valves. Below are some pictures of the progress so far.
I received more parts today. Looks way cleaner and better than before. Can’t wait to bleed them and go for a drive. Below are some pictures.
I don't remember the brand name, but I upgraded to slot and billeted rotors, and Ceramic pads. Made a big difference!
Looks like a great project done right, great job on cleaning the paint off the lines and caliper bolts! I really wish our 4-pot calipers had a smoother surface. I did the SS brake lines.. not a firm as I hopped. I have done some in the past and its soo nice and tight.. mine seemed more firm for sure.. but a less tight I guess I would say from different vehicle installs. Question.. did you get the rebuild kit (seals and pucks) from Rockauto?
