I know a lot of folks here on the forum have powdercoated their wheels, and the trend on new vehicles is blacked out wheels. Recent builds on TV (Wheeler Dealer, Truck Tech) have also blacked out the wheels to "Modernize" the trucks. I personally do not like the blacked out look and still like the original wheels in the original finish the best, but of course that's just me. Am I alone in that opinion? Has anyone who has done it to their wheels regretted it?
I have the original wheels and love them also. Question, can powder coated black wheels be stripped back to the original polished wheels?
I daily drive my truck so over the years I’ve refinished my wheels twice. The first time I had a little mishap with overpowering the rear tires while leaving a red light and turning... Sliding across an intersection onto the sidewalk really does a number on the wheels... That time I had them refinished/rebuilt in the factory finish. Currently my wheels are powder coated matte black. I will be honest and say at first I wasn't sure I had made a good decision but the look has grown on me and I’ve not met a single person that doesn’t like it. Aside from the RAM SRT 10 logo on the door, all of the other trim on the side of the truck is black. Once those were blacked out it really tied it all together to me.
I had my NR wheels redone by Detroit wheel and tire they have a PVD coating system in 2014. They look much sharper on my 10 and the truck really stands out. i get alot of compliments and people asking if the truck is new. When I tell em the year, their mouth drop especially not knowing Dodge had a viper in a truck mode lol!!!!
You should check out Detroit wheel and tire and their PVD Coating system you will not be disappointed.
Kiwi I bet in NZ you do not have to deal with the salts and the chloride the DOT splashes on our roads in winter that is what ruins our wheels. Unless you hibernate your 10, that stuff is rough on the wheels. That is how I found Detroit wheel and Tire they are really ggod. Winter has nothing on my wheels hose them and they are fine.
There is a guy on ebay who has a set of OEM Polished and are in pristine condition. Our wheels I think were manufactured by speedline. If anyone is looking for a great set.
Yes but they have to be stripped down but the cost would be immense. There is a company in CA that specializes in doing that.
Personally I like the Original look but the new trend calls for blacked out wheels and they tie in well with the looks of our rides. My NR came with black wheels that I had redone by Detroit Wheel and Tire best $$ spent. I see folks mouth drop when they see my 10 as it is all blacked out including all the head and tail lights. Alot of folk do not know about our 10"s that dodge stuffed a viper motor in the truck. I get alot of thumps up after I smoke em lol!!!
You are right. Up in the north we do not get snow, so as you say we have no road salts to deal with. My truck stays in the garage most days. Only bring it out on sunny days lol As for trends bah hum bug. I am never in fashion, so I figure one day shiny wheels will be fashionable again...saved myself a whole bunch of money lol
