Ok guys, I'm getting ready to have my tranny rebuilt at the end of the month. I need to know which automatic tranny we have, the diesel or gas version so that I can relay that to the tranny shop.

    Our transmission is a 48RE
SAME transmission for diesel or gas. Even the valve body has the same part number.

Strongly suggest using DEXRON VI instead of ATF+4
But your tranny shop will likely cover themselves and say IT'S NOT APPROVED FOR THIS TRANSMISSION!!!

What's the difference in the fluid? I know it has ATF+4 right now. Also, they will install a shift kit as part of the standard rebuild. What other fairly inexpensive enhancements can I have added, keeping those to about $300 above the rebuild cost.

The +4 is a slipping agent as the shudder created by the fluid before the plus 4 was setting off the knock sensors in the minivans because of shudder when going around corners.

From your perspective you don't want a slipping agent in your transmission fluid. That's what shift kits reduce- slip between shifts.

And it doesn't stink like ATF + 4

    Up to you man.
Glad to see its finally getting repaired.
Hopefully they will do a good flush on the convertor OR if is in your budget a new convertor in the 2600 to 2800 stall range.

Some relatively less expensive items and worth the money would be a billet accumulator piston, billet 2nd gear servo kit, billet/heavy duty kick down band strut, billet anchor, billet lever, GM style governor pressure sensor, upgraded metal pressure transducer(I believe the one I bought is for a 46re that works for the 48re). There might be other things I’m forgetting, but these things are definitely a good start. Big money items would be like a billet input and a good torque converter.

Sorry AMS3, I didn't thoroughly read your post.

    Yes indeed ! (as above).

The "Gold Can" Transducer for a 1999 Dodge Diesel is an excellent choice.
The Solenoid from a 4L80E (GM) transmission is also a good pick with larger ports and screens.

THAT is the problem with our OEM Solenoids (tiny ports and screens) and what makes them susceptible to plugging and transmission death.

The thing to watch for is interference when mounting the GM solenoid as the bracket used interferes with the body OF the Valve body and may prevent the Solenoid from sealing fully when installed. As in: You may think you have the bracket tight but it is actually kind of twisted instead of mounting on the flat and sealing (hard to explain but relatively easy to spot if you are paying attention).

any experienced tranny shop should not be relying on you ? to tell them what tranny you have ?? if they are ? I would rethink the shop's ability to build you a correct tranny ?

The shop rebuilds the torque converter, plus the pump and valve body. I researched the stall converter, a bit out of my price range. I'm already looking at around $3800 with the shift kit.

They know what I have, it was for my own information. This shop is well known and has nothing but accolades from everyone who's taken their vehicle to them, so I feel confident. If they F it up, they get to fix/replace it.

I am excited for you. You will think it is a different vehicle and it will be so much quicker and responsive.
Be even faster with an exhaust like mine:)

So all these years I thought a super charger made the difference, not exhaust. Who knew...:D

Quick question. Does anyone know if I need to add an extra trans cooler, or is the stock one good enough? My truck goes to the shop on Monday.

Because the quad cabs came with a trailer hitch, I'm assuming the cooler is also up to the task.

You have a QC right? Did you add one for the hp you have?
