Call me dumb, but the '05 service manual mentions 8.75qts of oil as the "oil service quantity" and 10qts as the "engine overhaul quantity." Is this to say a recently "rebuilt" engine needs extra oil for the first few hundred or thosand miles or something? Ronnie, I'm sure you know the answer!

After a rebuild, it takes extra oil to fill all the nooks and crannies that would normally still have oil still clinging there like the oil pickup tube, lifters, lifter galley, oil pan, camshaft, crankshaft, block, heads, piston oil-rings, cam and crank bearings, etc.

All those areas still have some oil in/on them even after you have drained it out during your regular oil change.

A fresh engine does not.
