I use a strong dish soap, warm water and a medium brush for the back side of the wheel. The dish soap will strip old wax of the wheels also. I use the same wax on my wheels, that I use on my truck. They come out looking great.
I clean my wheels before I park for the winter, as the break dust and other crap will cause corrosion/pitting on the back side of the wheels.

Not to sound ignorant but is the general consensus to pull them off to clean them or are folks rolling underneath?

Pull them off to clean. Then you can check suspension, brakes, etc, for everything & catch anything that looks like it might need attention. Everytime I change oil & filter, I put front end on jackstands to check everything you can't see or get to from "uptop"..
