Can anyone tell me how the 2004 viper engine manages "knock" ? 05 and up have a knock sensor . Not the 04. ............thanx
;)

Correct, the 04 doesn't pull timing when knock is sensed. Likely why 03/04 didn't have it yet 05/06 did. It was something that should've been there that they corrected in following years.
Now in a FI scenario the knock retard only can retard so much, and it WON'T prevent detonation. It's like insurance against it, but not a bulletproof solution.

Isn't that the opposite of Knock control...

fuel and timing tables are calculated with air density and pressure. this is all affected by temp. Adding a knock sensor is a easy way to allow the computer to manage timing depending on the amount of knock it feels. alot less calculating for the computer.

IAT Mod fools the computer for more power (timing+fuel) while a knock sensor will retard timing when it senses Knock.I don't see the IAT mod as a reliable control device.

Right.... this mod could hurt the engine if air temps get high. It really just keeps the computer thinking it is 50 F. But there is no Knock sensor on an 04 , when there is a 50 F temp rise there needs to be timing corrections that won't occur. 05/06 can depend on the knock sensor for protection.

This is why a good tune that adjust timing based on temps, map, TPS, rpm is the key to a great running engine regardless of temp. Not fooling sensors and such. That's unsafe and unpredictable for the most part. We just had a guy burn his IAT box with fire and rightfully so ;)
