Since the threads about shifters have been coming up I have received several inquiries about my Hurst short stick mod. Here is the complete story on this mod. This thread is intended to inform those who are interested in this mod and is not intended as a discussion on aftermarket shifters.
First the Stick I used is a Hurst 7991. It is available from Summit Racing for $52.99 Part number HUU-5387991.
You must first drill out the mounting holes to 11/16" to fit on the stock shifter mount
In this picture you can see the difference in length of the sock sick versus the new Hurst stick. The stock stick measures 12 3/8" the new one 9.82".
Here is the throw measurement on the stock stick the throw is approximately 6.25" from first to second gear.
This is the throw after the short stick is installed. The throw is approximately 4.75" from first to second.
To sum it up this stick provides a 22% reduction in the throw over the stock shifter. It has worked for me for over a year now without any problems. It is my experience, for those who have asked, that the installation of a T handle or pistol grip handle will only cause over management of the shift. I feel you are better off staying with a round ball and "palming" the 2-3 shifts. Momo makes some nice shift balls.
Good luck and happy shifting - john
