I like NOD32 don't know it's there unless there is a problem. No self advertising! updates regular.

Running out of battery on the laptop but:

Paid subscriptions:

Eset NOD32 (rated one of the best)

Dr. Web <=== My personal favorite. I see a lot of computers come through the shop and they all get scanned by it.

Free

Microsoft has one. I have been testing it on my front computer I use 10 hrs a day and seems to run really well. I will update you shortly as I need to test something...

Stay away from:

Norton
Avg
MacAfee
F-Secure
Zone Alarm

They are all resource hogs and will definitely slow down your computer.

Just my 2 cents.

Wil

I also use AVG (most computer techs seem too)

You can use the free version but I prefer the full version. I also run Vista 64 bit but I do have 8 gigs of RAM.

been trying the DR web....Doing the complete scan is taking forever..Almost 4 hours and just about 1/2 way done,,,354000+ files so far.... Is this they way it is suppose to run??????

virus protection is a scam. you won't even get a virus if you don't download "free" stuff off the internet.

I have never gotten a virus on my computer but it seems like everyone I know gets them all the time.

I can't buy the scam part and the only way to get a virus by downloading free stuff... Had a back door trojan years ago that was from an email that a freind sent me ---all I did was open his email...No attachements..... when I used norton I was searching the web and opened the site and bam norton caught a virus coming from that site,,,,When I first bought this computer less than a year ago,,,Norton quaretined a Trojan --I have no idea where that one came from???

Get AVG Jim. Another bonus is that it doesnt use up so much of your computer like Norton. You will need to uninstall any anti virus programs first but I have never had a problem since switching to AVG. Good luck

James,That is the one I'm leaning towards at the moment ----DR web is still running LOL just hit 6 hours I'm wondering what this programs is doing LOL

I make a living working on the internet, and have never gotten a virus. I do understand very well exactly how viruses work and get on your computer. It's very easy to get a virus on someone's computer who browses for free software, porn, etc... pretty much clicks on anything and runs their computer with administrator privileges all the time. Many viruses on the internet today are written by the same people who make the "virus removal tools"

Just be smart and don't download free stuff off the internet. ESPECIALLY FREE VIRUS SCANNERS!!

Make backups of your data. I use backblaze.com. it's cheap and I use it to store a backup of all my digital photography. I've got a couple TB of photos and video now.

Tools like semantec and norton make your computer SLOW. it's not worth it.

Another great tool I use is Registry Watch. It backs up your registry and you can see exactly what changed after installing software. Registry watch also makes a report of every file on your hard drive and can tell you what files have changed as well. If you absolutely must install a piece of free software, you simply use registry watch to see what that program actually installs.

I've sneaky little things try to run on peoples computer that won't trip a virus scanner. Things that do nothing more than pop fake alerts up on your screen telling you that you have a virus! Then they have a fake online virus scan that confirms you're infected and makes you purchase their tool to remove it. it's all a scam.

Also, don't use microsoft email programs or web browsers since these are what the viruses are written to exploit. (to get the biggest target audience)

I definitely agree. Limewire, frostwire and others keep me very busy. Facebook is also a website that you have to be careful with.

I haven't really used an antivirus program either.

The best programs I have found for spyware and malware are:

Superantispyware and Malwarebytes. Both awesome programs.

ccleaner is excellent for cleaning up temp files and cleaning up the registry.

i recommend kaspersky if you want good control over your anti-virus if you want something you install and forget about get bit defender both very good anti-viruses. as far as it being a scam. if you are online at all you stand a chance at getting a virus. i work on computers for a living also (network administrator) if you are online you stand a good chance at coming across viruses. only way you dont have to worry about them is if you have a locked off system that never gets online. then as long as you are clean there really isnt a way in there unless someone else brings over or you use there media of any sort and it comes in from that.

If i buy AGV internet security with a 2 year subscription can i install it on more than one of my cpu's?

You will have to check their policy on that. I'll go have a look
