So it seems like their is a large amount of people on this forum that are serving, have served, or are about to serve in the military. I think this is part of the reason there is such a good bond here. I was wondering who all is in the military now or have been in the past.

I'll start off.

Eric: Hi, my name is Eric and I have been in the Army for 6 years now.

Group: Hi Eric

Eric: It all started in 2000 when I left for basic training. I have since then been stationed in Germany and am on my second tour of Iraq. I am a Sergeant (although I still don't know how to spell it:eek: ) and so is my wife. My primary job is working with communications equipment of all kinds. Although recently I have been promoted to the postion of checking the dumpsters to make sure they are all even.:D I hope to one day make it back to the states and become a helicopter pilot and play with my new Truck.

Counselor: Wow Eric that is a quite a story. We are here to help. Thanks for sharing.

Group: :congrats:

HEHEHE:D

Well guys lets here your story.

Eric,

Thank you for your time served/serving my friend. However I am a little worried about someone talking to themselves on a forum a 1:30 AM. A little to many brewsky's maybe??:D :p

Hi, my name is Charles and I too was an Armyaholic :D (6 years)

I joined in 88, Basic training at Ft Jackson, SC.
MOS training (14 months) at Ft Gordon, GA (29Y Fixed Station Satellite)

Spent 2 1/2 years in Germany (Landstuhl ) Yup, right next to the hospital. Got the double wammy on the food...Army mess hall in a hospital. Needless to say I ate out alot with a mixture of Hamburger helper ;)

I was in during Desert Storm and maintained satellite communications for all the middle east and most of Europe back to the US. From spread sprectum satellite feeds to the USS Lasalle to the USC-28 mobile Sat units all over Kuwait and Iraq. Had to maintain and fix just about everything. Lot of interesting stories...most I cant tell you ;)

Spent the rest of my time in the communications installation Btln at Ft Huachuca, AZ. Which sent me to Hawaii for 5 months :D and followed that up with 6 months at Ft Leavonworth, KS :(

Did get to play Rugby for the Army for 3 years. A little in Europe and then in AZ. Loved it

Anyway, the Army wasnt the place for me but I am glad I joined and served my country.

Well in Germany it was 7:30am ;)

No military service for me, but much proud history in the family. I have the utmost respect and admiration for those who did serve or are serving.

I tried to talk my wife into allowing me to join the reserves later in our marriage, but no go with three kids for her to raise solo, and would have to sell the house & cars.

Great uncle is a medaled Pearl Harbor survivor, Dad served in Korea, Brother was Air Force. I went to college and summarily ended up married and starting a family which spoiled my military plans.

A great friend of our family is a World War 2 vet who was frontline Navy during the invasions of Leyte, Okinawa, Iwo Jima and even fought the retreating Japanese on the Chinese border. I just typed up his autobiography for him. He was also part of the huge frontline force preparing to invade mainland Japan just before the bombs were dropped. He spent several days as a POW on Iwo Jima. Great guy - near 80 years old now. Still has episodes of shell-shock 60 years later. He saw some nasty things in his 2 years of WW2. He himself was shot in the helmet, bayonetted in the stomach, schrapnel to the face/eye, launchboat gate cable snapped and slashed both legs, and much much more.

Hi my name is Rick and I spent 10 awesome years in the Navy. I work as a Electronic/Communication Tech most of the time. I also work as a Brig Master at Arms guarding prisoners.

Tours:

Oct 1995: Great Lakes, Il (Boot Camp. Sucked due to the -41 F temp at times)

Jan-Oct 1996: Pensacola, Fl. (Loved every single moment of it. A school and C-School)

Nov 1996-July 1999 USS George Washington CVN-73 (Mostly Great times, did one deployment to the Med and Gulf)

August 1999-July 2001 USS Deyo DD-989 (Sucked most of the time. Deployed to the Med as part of NATO. The highlight of the cruise was being flashed by the female crew of the Dutch ship).

August 2001-Sept 2001 Bilouxi, Mississippi (Had a pretty good time there. C-School)

Oct 2001-Oct 2005 Norfolk, VA (Loved every moment there)

I left the service and am doing exactly the same thing but as a contractor.:D

Retired Army Special Forces here, hence the avatar.

Served 4 years in 82nd Airborne Division
8 years in 5th Special Forces Group (Desert Shield/Storm, Somalia twice)
8 years in 20th SFG including one year activated with 10th SFG (Kosovo)

I do miss my teams but do not miss being deployed overseas most of the time.

The really smart one here who knew it all at 19 ( late 1966) and figured out that going into the Army beat the 4 year scholarship he had for college. :damnmate:
So, Basic at Ft Bragg, NC early '67
AIT (Huey Helicopter mechanic school) at Ft. Eustis, VA affectionately known as Ft Uterus, Vagina mid '67
Additional training as AH-1C (Cobra) crew chief at Ft Eustis, VA late '67
Then the real culmination of the wisdom of my decision, a visit to Southeast Asia. 235th Armed Helicopter Company Jan '68- Jan '69 Can Tho, ever so lovely Republic of Viet Nam.
Home to Hunter Army Air Field in Savannah, GA '69-'70.

At the time of the original decision thought it was better then a liberal arts degree and a future of standing in front of a room full of urchins teaching history. 30 years later, too many "careers" too mention and I still think it was the better decision for me. God Bless all of you who have served and those of you who still are. Be careful out there. :burnout:

Awesome guys. So far a great group. Thank you all.

Ok a little more info.

July 2000-September 2000: Basic training (FT. Benning, GA)

September 2000-March 2001: AIT (FT. Gordon, GA) MOS 25U Signal Systems Support Specialist.

March 2001-December 2002: HQ V Corps (Heidelberg, Germany)

January 2003-January 2004: Operation Iraqi Freedom I (started out in Kuwait finished up in Baghdad.

January 2004-December 2005: HQ V Corps (Heidelberg, Germany)

January 2005-current: Operation Iraqi Freedom (Baghdad, Iraq)

That about somes up my career. Germany is a great place, but I am about ready to get back to the states. And as you can tell the military has been good to me so far. (Finacially. It helps to be dual military;) ) Can't say I have enjoyed all of it, but it has been a great start to life for me. Wouldn't have met my wife otherwise.

:congrats: to all who are serving or have served.!!!!

I am an Army Brat, grew up in the Army. My father served for 32 years total, active service and reserve. The first I saw my father cry is when they forced his reitrement. The ceremony was at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Ga. in the Field.

A few years later, Daddy Bush started Desert Storm. My father tried everyway to get himself reactived. He was not successful, second time I saw him tear up. So, he was forced to watch it on CNN.

Me, I chose to serve the Civilians here inside the States. I Protect Americas Citizens by Enforcing Americas Laws. God Bless to all in Irag, serving elsewhere or about to serve.

I of course am not military but my Dad was US Army...he went fixed wing to rotary. Everytime a new whatever came up he was sent to learn to fly it. He was in the Korean War, Dominican Republic Dispute. and Viet Nam. He returned to Savannah, where Hunter was an Air Force Base which was turned over to the Army. He was a master aviator, and Head of DOI...then helped with the training of the nam pilots as they started coming over. He reached the rank of LT Col.....He died at 65 in 1993 and I miss him still today. He inspired Smoke to go into Navy...just something fyi

My entire family.

Myself -- Army
Father -- Marine
Stepfather -- Airforce
Stepbrother -- Army
Grandfather -- Army
Wifes Grandfather -- Army

I graduated from high school in 80 and I decided that I would follow my father's footsteps and join the Navy. I was offered a guaranteed contract to go in under the nuclear program. Boy Dad sure was proud, he served as an "officer and gentlemen" so he was a little disappointed that I was going to be enlisted. Then one day while at the recruiters office I saw a couple of Marines standing there in their dress blues and the idea hit me! What would piss old Dad off more than me being a Marine grunt? LOL. Next thing you know I was on my way to PI. After being there for about 5 minutes I realized that my plan had somehow backfired on me hehehehe. I also made the mistake of starting boot in October, which meant that I was stuck there through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.

Went to ITS at Camp Geiger and then it was off to the Rock (Okinawa). I was assigned to Weapons Co 2/4, the Magnificant Bastards, at Camp Schwab. Got to do a great WestPac float and then we became the first unit to take part in the unit rotation program, back to Lejeune.

I was then transferred to the 6th Marines, where we wore the French Fortege as a reward for being the original "Devil Dogs" of WWI. While there I got the chance to do both a Carribean float and a NATO. Then it was off to Beirut, to serve as part of the International Peacekeeping Force. I was lucky enough to leave there just prior to the bombing of the Marine Barracks in 83. After the bombing I was chosen to attend the memorial service that President Reagan presided over at General Grey's (who would later become Commandant) headquarters.

All in all it was a life experience that I would never trade. Good times and bad, but I gained something there that I would never have found anywhere else.

I salute all those that have come before me and all those that have followed behind me. There is nothing like an American Fighting Man or Woman.

In a former life I was an EOD tech for the AF in the early 80s. Did some interesting things that most never get to see, or hear about. Now Im older, slightly wiser, still have all my fingers, and am thankful for all that serve.

My Grand Father died in Korea. (Army/Merchant Marines)
My Step Grand Father. (Airforce)
Uncle (Air Force)
2 Cuz's Served 1 in Air Force and in still currently in the Navy

We all owe it to every memeber that has ever wore the uniform of the United States Military!!!!

MARINE CORPS-SECURITY FORCES! Semper FI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
grandfather served in WWII, my other grandfather served in Korea. had uncles that served in Nam. i think everyone should serve in the military, and there would be more honor and peace in the world

Hi, my name is John.

Went in for my draft physical in 1969. 4F. Guess they didn't like animals. Seriously I was rated 4F because I was allergic to bee stings. I thought it was kind of ironic, in that I could be sent to Viet Nam to be possibly killed, but I couldn't die from a bee sting while in the service.

To all that have served, currently serve, or will serve in the future, you have my utmost respect, support, and admiration. May everyone of you return home safely and enjoy the freedom you protect. God bless you all.
