Well, installed Volant intake. For what you're paying, I think this is a piece of crap. Poor plastic ( I work with plastic so I know what i'm saying !!), bad finishing, and bad mounting ( lot of air between pieces).
IMHO the system have to cost less than 100 $ for what you receive ( just becouse the moulding have a big costs).

I didn't mounted the piece that goes to the hood scoop, It doesnt' work ( as read in this forum).

Volant Intake response

As i researched the volant intake i realized alot of people were getting caught up in the fact that it used the air scoop on the hood. After some research i found that the numbers volant quotes could be off. I ended up going with the k&N GenII and found it on a site called www.drivewire.com. They had it in stock and ready to ship for $300. I put it on today and am happy with it.

At first the volant made so much more sense but after looking at price and reviews i ended up with k&N. I am happy with my system , nice sound to the engine, and i can feel a little power increase but nothing crazy.

What makes the plastic bad on the volant just out of curiousty?

I have heard some people like the Volant, and some don't. I don't have one, and I have not seen one in person so I can't comment.

Bill.

I've had both the k and n and the volant, well stuck withthe volant because its what she like, nothing really beats the drop in , everything else is just for looks.

Well, it's difficult to explain in english for me, but if you pay lot of $ for air filter and the box you expect to have 1st quality plastic ( inside you do not have a lot of air bubbles as I found), good assembly as the original, and no spaces between pieces. And this is not what you find if you buy it.

Red thanks, you know, if you buy something made in china, you'd expect to have bad quality. But, if you buy made in USA, I expect good quality. As everyone I suppose.

Volant

Mine fits perfectly behind the intake. I have to drill an extra hole in the 'funnel', to keep it high enough, but other than that it works good for me.

Does anyone have pics of their Volant installed?

I'm looking for specific pics of the area where the MAF is inserted. I think there's a big problem with mine.

TIA.

MOPAR CAI not only looks good, but it's high quality shiznit!:D:D

Lots of money though for little HP...BLING is in effect however!!!:)

Dude...wrong thread. Try over here:

:)

EDIT- Here's a pic of the holes in question:
volantholes1.jpg

Green is for the MAF sensor.
Red is for the pass. side oil breather, correct?

These holes are bare. Should there be some type of gasket/grommet in them? As is, neither the MAF sensor nor the pass. side breather fit in there.

Any info is appreciated.

I have to admit, it was very cool of Volant to send over an entire hardware package....at no charge!

I posted an install overview at the NFFF. Here's the cut and pics::

UPS Tossed the box over my fence today, so I went ahead and did the install after work. Here are some pictures of the install and my own observations on the system as a whole.

1) Battery Tray: It's gotta stay in. The Volant box replaces the stock gromments with clip-nuts and bolts down to the origional tabs hanging off of the battery tray. For those of you that ripped the thing out for the K&N, SORRY!!!

2) '04 Breather tube: Maybe this applies to the '05 as well. The origional breather runs into a foot long plastic tube into the box lid. The Volant setup gives you a gromment next to the throttle body and the intake temp sensor. They don't include a smaller tube! I improvised this by sawing the footer down to a few inches. While I'm near the temperature sensor, I have to mention that the little bugger looks quite fragile and it's a MOTHER to pull out of the stock air tube!

3) Fit & Finish: The access hole on top of the airbox I got was too small for the filter. A little measuring and Rotozip effort fixed that problem right away. I still have to wrestle the filter into place after it's actaually in the box. That thing is HUGE! There is a second additional bracket to be installed on the lower front of the box that bolts down to a stock bolt next to the radiator. There was no hole drilled for this bracket. Over all, the plastic is burr free and well textured and the aluminum cover has a protective sheet for shipping. The metal brackets were painted black, but it didn't adhere very well and was heavily chipped and scratched upon delivery.

4) Water: The box itself isn't actually drilled with drains for water but it has a large square opening at the front of the box behind the grill backing. If anything ( like, say... a small bird! ) gets sucked in, it should fall out this hole before giving you any trouble with the filter. This hole is behind the grill backing so it would work better as an outlet than an inlet. If water gets in, it would pool in the box by about an inch before it's high enough to pour out the hole. It would get nowhere near the filter except for any mist that the engine would suck in. On a side note, the box isn't fully sealed anyway. A couple of 1/8" holes at or near the lowest point wouldn't hurt. I poured a couple of ounces of water into the box after the install and looked for where it pooled. I drilled a hole at the base of the pool and another about a inch uphill for luck.

5) Scoop Alignment: More of an art than a science. The metal bars had to be bent a bit to get things right. And some trial&error was necessary to make sure that the hood didn't crash into the scoop and knock it to a crazy angle.

6) Experience: I'll play with the truck more before I come to any SOTP conclusions, but upon first drive here are my observations:

>Vacuum Hiss is quite apparent when decelerating and especially when downshifting. Nothing that buries the stock exhaust gurgle though.

>It does howl a bit more than the stock intake, but not disturbingly so. I'd say that the intake is closely in chorus with the exaust when wide open. Equal sound front&back.

>My initial SOTP response is, DAMN!
I've since cut off the scoop grill so now the wood chipper is visible. Assuredly no performance gain but there's no visible doubt where the air is going :hmmmm2:. I stand by my initial SOTP conclusion. Some things work better on the dyno, some work better on the street. And you can't actually dyno a hood scoop without a wind tunnel.:D:thefinger:

Thanks V8eater!

Mine is finally installed tonight. The grommets for the oil breather tube and MAF sensor are courtesy of the local hardware store (Volant is sending me a stock set too).

The MAF sensor is a bietch to remove from the stock inlet tube. Hint: bring the rubber to room temp before trying to remove it.

My pass. cylinder head oil breather line is not even close to lining up correctly (05 RC). It now travels OVER the Volant inlet tube and then down to the right angle elbow pictured above. It's a little hokey, but I can live it with overnight.

The Volant scoop is NOT EVEN CLOSE to being level with the scoop on the hood. I've tried adjusting fasteners and shifting components. Not gonna happen. Either the scoop itself or the brackets for it aren't formed correctly. You choose.

The sound is kinda cool, but the rest of the unit left me limp (literally). I would take pics, but I'm too bummed. Maybe tomorrow.

I said screw it and took some pics.

I got the camera as level as possible considering I have 8" of room to shoot. You can use the top edge of the radiator as a guide for level.

The cover is off the airbox so I can access the bolts/nuts for the brackets.

Even with this you can see how unlevel the scoop is.

- All hardware is in it's proper place: http://www.tremol-no.com/images/woodblock/srt-10/volant/P1000599.JPG
No new holes drilled or modified. The brackets are also unmodified. I did, however, swap out the bolts, lock washers & nuts for Grade 8 stainless steel. Kooky habit of mine. :)

As you can see, it's not level. (sorry for the redundancy)

Did I miss something? Am I mounting something incorrectly?
I'll send the pics off to Volant and see what they have to say.

Any input is welcome.
Thanks folks!

I have an 05 QC withit installed send me a pm to remind me and I'l take some pics bro. I have alot going on tommorrow so I'll need the pm to remind me;)

That scoop needs quite a bit of adjustment.:p It's an art, not a science. See what you can do by pivoting the scoop rubber fitting clockwise (tilting the scoop 'back' or 'up' :dontknow:) and see how the alignment is. I shaved the grill, so the scoop has to be perfectly aligned. With a little effort; mission accomplished.

Yeah. I've done the 'art' route. Still not even close. The pics that I put up are AFTER trying to tweak and adjust everything.

I didn't hear back from Volant today. I'll update when they contact me.
