I had the truck at the muffler shop Friday for some exhaust work..the installer told me I needed to see something....the Bassani headers were melting the wires connecting to my starter......the starter motor was so hot it burnt the installer's hand........I bought some alum heat sheild for starter motors at Auto Zone to cure the problem....

Dont know if this is has came up before but if not now you are warned..;)

No, I threw the pakage away but the shield was specifically for starter protection from headers...they were the alum insulated type as recommended by the shop..Got them at Auto Zone but most auto part stores probably carry them.

i must be lucky, don't have a starter heat shield....... over a year on my LT b&b jet-hot coated headers w/o issues with starter or it's wires....... :)

This may be just an issue with shortys...the collector is near the starter....

I also have a hole melted in the passenger side fender well.

i seen one goober that removed his plastic things on his grill ,,,to let more air in ,,they are mounted behind grill insert black plastic ,lift hood look behind grill,,i will be cutting some nice square slots that will match the chrome grill spacing,, and i have seen two peeps with headers with slightly melted spot on passenger side fender well, i will try to stick some heat sheild tape there to see if this works if not i will remove fender well and trim it to clear the header better

I am planning on covering the hole and putting a heat shield on it....Like JR said it is a good place for poop to get thrown up in the engine comp..

You also have wiring running up the wheel well,I believe it is for the ABS not sure though. You may need to protect that too.

Larry the starter and steering shaft both get pretty toasted by the Bassani's. I have the same issue.

This is what i went with,And also a pic. of the damage.

I wonder if just changing the grills out with the black honeycomb grill would solve the large FOD issue. then you could just remove the rear black inserts.
