Has anyone experienced a strange drone/vibration around 2,000rpm before on their trucks? It will happen in any gear, any speed, always around 2,000rpm, and it usually will only start doing it once its warm.

This is not simple an exhaust drone... its almost like something is making an extremely deep buzz under the truck.... but it wont really do it in Neutral... and you dont feel it like a drivetrain vibration... I feel it more in the floorpan...

I have checked:

Heat Sheilds on Manifolds, and Floorpan of truck.. They seem tight and not contacting anything....

Ive checked the pipe routing, and its not in contact with anything, and if I deliver blows to the exhaust with my fit or a rubber mallet I dont hear it....

It did it with the catted mids, and now with the offroad mids put on yesterday....

Its annoying, and Im sort of at a loss.... any ideas where or what to look at next??

Its strange to me that it only comes when its warm, and is not speed or gear related at all... Its a harmonic type vibration... non violent, just very deep and buzzing... Making me crazy haha!

Anyone think it could be inside the magnaflow muffler??? Its got some miles on it.... :dontknow:

If it's the same thing annoying me, then it's harmonics off the tranny itself! I have a low pitch rumble that shakes the shifter so slightly and the rearview mirror can be seen barely vibrating. So yes, I think it's either tranny harmonics, or driveshaft harmonics.

Just started reading about oil cooler line noises...??? The guy who owned it before me said he never really heard it... but he traded it in with leaking cooler lines and the stealership replaced them. Any chance these new lines are making a noise? Im new to Viper motors.... dont want to miss any potential damaging situations...

Some have reported the oil filter will sing abit until the engine warms the drone I am sure is the exhaust. Very common with headers and no cats. Even the Billy boat has drone! If you think it is driveline then. Set the park brake , loosen the shifter, go through the gears with it loose , then retighten the shifter. That might help!

Well in my case its quiet until it starts to warm up.. wouldnt the drone always be present even while cold if it was simply the exhaust. Its the fact that its a buzzing deep vibration that comes and goes thats ort of bothers me... Hell sometimes it will do its through ne set of gear changes, stop at a light, and it wont do it on the next set of changes. Its mostly feel in the floorboard and dash area it seems like.... I hope I can isolate it. Its annoying as hell...

magnaflow baffle broke loose? this has been an issue with them.....

Do oil lines make alot of noise? I heard people saying it was vibrating their dash etc?...

Wonder how i would diagnose that...

well if you can put the truck up on a lift and have some one run the engine up to the required RPM with you looking and listening underneath or better yet at the tips,i would think you could pin point it.

Thats the bitch... it wont really do it in N... more a light load situation while moving.....

For those of you who followed this thread… some interesting developments. The truck had a massive oil leak http://www.vtcoa.com/forums/f7/bad-news-49001/ and after diagnosis, the oil filter had developed a hairline crack… spraying oil everywhere in the engine bay and then on under the truck.

Whats more interesting here, is that after a new filter was put in place, the noise described originally in this thread, no longer exists. Im assuming some kind of internal failure of the oil filter that later caused a crack? Either way, I like to finish out a diagnosis thread.

So, looks like a bad oil filter was the cause of my noise…

Glad to hear all is again well and that that bad filter didn't screw something up interally like shear the oil pump shaft and pile the engine! Was the oil pressure gauge reading any different with that filter on. Compared to now?

Nope exact same... very odd... and yeah the gauge does work.

Have you had any more issues with the drone and oil leak? I ask because I have been hearing the exact same low done until the truck is warmed up for the last week or so and now I have a massive puddle of oil under my 10. . . . . . I hope it is just a cracked filter . . . .

It looks like I lost at least 2 quarts of oil. . . . I hope there isn't any engine damage . . .

Nope... thats how i figured it out... i actually didnt think the filter had anything to do with the noise... but when i blew the filter I just had it towed to the dealer i had just bought it from.. (had no idea what let loose, too much oil to see), the showed me the cracked filter and replaced/changed the oil, and i never had it since...

What brand of oil filters were you guys using that cracked?

Some kind of parts house junk... i wanna say protech or something like that... was all white no logo....

I have a Mobil 1 on it now... no issue...

How much oil did you loose? I could see a trail of oil all through my neighborhood were I had driven.
