Shock Absorber - what could have caused this?

I posted a picture of this shock months ago which was kind-of distanced view.
I want to reverse the lowering done on my truck which means reversing the leaf spring from the bottom to the top of the rear axle.
I got the shock removed now and for the life of me can’t understand how it could break in half. I have never heard of a shock ever doing this. What could have caused this?
This part number stamped on it is 34515, which is most likely a Monroe.

I’ve never seen that happen , ever !
Had to do with the lowering and shock travel being changed and bottoming out causing the fluid to leak out then constant self impact ..
 
They don't. 10's used Bilsteins. These can be used on regular 2wd 1500's (not the 4wd) no problem, but a standard length shock on a lowered truck is going to get bottomed out.
That makes me wonder what the standard length between the Monroe’s part number on the first post compared to the Bilsteins standard length on the 10’s is or why it appears Monroe’s were chosen to be used .
