Clutch and shifting issues.

Hello everyone,

I’m hoping I can get some advice on an issue with my truck. I bought it at the end of 2025 with 52k miles. It appears completely stock. About 100 miles after I got it, the serpentine belt broke, so I’m assuming it just needed some routine maintenance.

I recently flushed the clutch fluid, which was dark and showed a lot of moisture. I also flushed the transmission fluid and replaced it with Mobil 1 ATF.

Even after that, I’m still dealing with a very stiff clutch pedal. It doesn’t return to the center position when I’m in neutral, and while driving it’s almost impossible to downshift into 3rd gear.

Does this sound like it needs a transmission rebuild, or could it be something simpler? Any insight would be greatly appreciated — especially why the clutch is suddenly so stiff and the shifter is acting up.

Thanks in advance!

Possibly the clutch needs adjusted if that wasn't part of the service you did? Good luck I'm sure the more knowledgeable will comment soon!

Possibly the hydraulics failing .. back in the day that hydraulics were updated by many on here ,, there should be threads on here about that ..

Any ugly grindy-noises in neutral at idle?

Is the shifter tight when in neutral? Like the self-centering is weak, or is it non existent entirely? I'm not well versed in the innards of the T56 (or any transmission)...But the self-centering magic in neutral can reside either in the transmission itself or in the shift tower on top.

Had an aftermarket shifter assembly that didn't like to center very well in neutral. Felt like slightly too-tight tolerances at the ball and socket in the tower. Was hoping it would "break in," but it never did.

Some food for thought!

I would start with the clutch and hydraulic system. Also, yes if the trans is heavy shifting, engine off and the shifter does not want to center, you have a gearbox issue.
Stick with a stock type clutch and hydraulic bearing release unit. Joe at Westminster Transmission in Ca is a expert on these gearboxes if you need it done. Also John Donato
at Donato Racing Transmissions.
