Looking for a little advice...

I have an '04 RC that appears to have a magnaflow cat back (bought it with it, so don't really know what it is)... 3" cat-less mids too... stock manifolds though.

It sounds wicked... I love it.
I CAN'T STAND the drone it makes in the cab between 1500 and 1900 rpm...

Thoughts on how to reduce this?

- Would putting hi-flow cats on help? Gonna have to have cats when I move to NC here soon anyways.
- Maybe a stock resonator?
- Other ideas?

Thanks
Matt

I have Belanger hi flow cats on my RC and have no drone..when I bought the truck it had Flow masters and stock cats on it and sounded ok but the drone was awful.....running a MBRP dual exhaust and it sounds great and no drone...also in NC so I have to run cats...where abouts in NC are you moving too?

Charlotte area...
I'm hoping that the cats will fix it. Otherwise, I love the exhaust. Thanks for the reply!

yup, another guy just put on the HFC with headers and said there was no drone, and also will pass inspection, headers are optional thouh:p

I was running a Magnaflow on stock manifolds and mid pipes. Had the drone. Had to take it off. Good luck.

Dynomax has a new VT muffler, with valve in it to regulate flow and made to reduce/eliminate drone, but open up for full flow at higher throttle. I have been thinking of using them for just this reason.

There is a website I remember googling of someone with an older big block Challenger, comparing these with the Dynomax Ultraflow and having very good results with overall volume and drone. Lots of Evo owners have had good results with the VT. This is just info from googletime, not my own experience with them.

Cool let me know when your in town and we will get together, if ya need any help moving in PM me................

i've only had maggies on my truck...it's all in the cats... i had manifolds with 4 oem cats, then manifolds and two cats...got some drone with the two cats off, but not bad...
now have headers, high flows, and maggies...no drone, and fantastic sound...

i'd say your problem could be fixed with high flows...but once you add up the cost and all the exhaust work you'll be half way to headers and high flows...ask me how i know;)

I've got stock manifolds, mids and cats with a Magnaflow catback and no drone. Previous owner had put a flowmaster that rattled and buzzed and had a terrible drone. I put on the Magnaflow to fix it. Been happy ever since. Looking at header/mids now to complete the exhaust.

Not sure if it will help you but I have a Mopar/Borla on my 06. No drone. Although, I am running stock manifolds and cats.

I have Bellanger headers, hiflow cats and started with magnaflow catback but switched to Mopar/Borla because of the drone. Now I have very little.
Remember there are 2 kinds of exhaust tuning, performance and acoustic.
Some say that an X or crossover pipe works to reuce drone.

So since there are two types of tuning, does that mean that you can't have an acoustically pleasing (no drone) setup on a performance system?

I was thinking x-pipe too, but didn't know what might be causing the resonance...

Hrmm... Lot's of stuff to try.

it does not replace the mids...it's just the xpipe that you could use to help even out the exhaust flow...you'd still have some exhaust work to do...

i looked all over ebay and i can't find a bassani xpipe, but the magnaflow is about $100...

i paid $100 for it and never used it...so if i could get that back, it'd be nice...

I am running Mopar LT headers,no cats,Bassani catback thats 3" from muffler back and when I took out the resonator,I gained horrible droan at 2400-2800 RPM! (Right at highway speed :( ),probably going to put a resonantor back in???

With a proper gear box (6sp manual cough cough) you'd be at 1600-1700rpm's while on the highway. :D

No it means that you can have good performance with a good sound, or good performance with a okay sound or good performance with a terrible sound (drone, popping etc)
Conversely you could have poor performance with a good sound, poor performance with a okay sound or poor performance with a terrible sound.

It is also somewhat personal, some guys like their exhaust to be as loud and obnoxious as possible and don't care about the performance.

There are lots of different exhaust setups on youtube and on this site.
But I haven't heard many from inside the cab cruising at 3K rpm to let you hear how much drone there really is.
Hope this helps.

Two choices to stop the drone....Magnaflows were designed to work with the stock cats....to me the best sounding exhaust out there....but w/o the cats you have extreme drone......high flow cats will kill most of the drone....some 18" cherry bomb glass paks where the cats would go will do as good or better...;)
