I see that the manufacture calls for mobil 1 10-30 but yet I just bought my truck and the previous owner only ran mobil1 20-50, I am wondering why and why do most other guys run this? What is the benefits?

from what I've read on here 2004 models were said to use 10w30 because 0w40 wasn't available at the time and 0w40 is called for on the 05-06 models. I have seen a lot of different opinions of oil choice on here though depending on climate and mileage on the motor. I have 92k on mine and I live in Louisiana... I'm curious to what would be suggested for my 2005 model..

20/50 helps tone down the valvetrain noise that these engines have. I still run 10/30 in mine because that's what the manufacturer calls for.

Always used 15-50 in mine and 0-40 in cold storage.

Im about 700 miles till im due for a change, what would yall recommend for my 05? It'll be daily driven year around in louisiana climate..this will be my first time changing it since my ownership.

0W40 Mobil 1 here...

The reason is that the previous owner did not understand that the 0W allows for quicker flow and better protection at start up. 20W is ridiculously thick for start up conditions. Unless it is a specifically built engine with modified oil galleys, bearing clearances and oil pump to match.

W50 is "thicker" at 100 deg. C. and may keep mechanical components quieter (or a "loose" engine happy). However, increased parasitic loss with less ability to carry heat away from bearings is a result. TOO MUCH psi at high RPM will cause a power drag. I feel even W40 is a touch high. I still maintain my 10 PSI per 1000 RPM on a hard run even in the Arizona heat. I'd bet that the 0W30 would maintain that also. I will be trying that soon.

Cheers!

I have an '05 QC with 600 miles shy of 95,000. 15-50 all the way with Wal-Mart Mopar 090 filters. I think it is running stronger than when I got it at 15K miles. I add 1qt at 4,000 if I do not change it at that time. Always change at 5K or less. 99% of my driving is on the highway so I believe the oil lasts a little longer than town driving. :dontknow:

I live in the hot TEXAS 100+ summers so go with the heavier oil. I have blown 2 filters until Dr. Viper turned my on to the MOPAR 090 at Wal-mart No problems after that. Do make sure the changer gets the old gasket ring out or you will have a big leak.

Im at 92k on mine and ill be the changer and we have plenty of hot days here in louisiana....August and September can be so miserable with the humidity lol...we have a few touches of sub freezing temps in the winter which we are seeing currently. I dont think i would trust bringing it to a jiffy lube or something.

I had a couple engines built by a nationally known builder [ V8's ] and had a long talk with him about oil. He told me that living in FL to run 15w50 mobile1 all the time. I've done this in all my cars / trucks for 14 years now and NEVER had any failures of any kind. I also use 20w50 Amsoil full synthetic with ZDDP additives.

15Wx oil is plenty thin enough to start in colder weather just like anything else take a little time to allow it to get some heat in it before you start using heavy doses of throttle.

hmm I'll have too see what the local Walmart and parts houses keep on hand. they keep mobile 1 among other full synthetics but not sure if they have the variety of weights. the motor does have some age on it so I'm sure some 15w50 wouldn't be a terrible idea. I have seen Mobile 1 offer a high mileage full synthetic as well. in sure it has some extra additives in it. I'll also go with a mopar filter... worse case I can pick one up at the dealer if the regular parts places don't have one in stock. living out in the boondocks, Walmart here especially has a reputation for keeping something but don't keep the shelf stocked regularly.

Just getting into the break in period then:)

10qts of Mobil 1 0w40 for my 06. I also get the "special" white viper filter from the dealer. Btw I found Walmart had the best price for the Mobil 1.

I've used 15w-50 in mine, with either Mopar filters or the viper filters from JTSVP for a loooooooooooooooooong time now and never had any problems what so ever. But then again, my truck sees more garage time than anything else. Only has 12k miles and only comes out on nice 80 degree Georgia days :D

as far as oil filters go a racing Fram HP1 will work, its large and has a high flow rate, i only used the fram cuz it came off my race car early and was still like new, Moroso or a Jomar filter will be my next filter, these v10s are big engines and the little pint size filters dont cut it as far as im concerned, like i said a fram 8a will interchange to a fram hp1 to the ph43 to the ph16which is called out for in the fram catalog for the viper v10
