I had tp put My Golden (shadow) to sleep a couple of weeks ago, Truthfully if I was on death row I woulod be chanting do it now! Their hell is the wait./ I watched My friend of 13 yrs go tto sleep and it was the most humane thing I have ever seen. ( allthough the saddest)

Last dog I had to have put down, I couldn't be there when it was done. I have 2 dogs that the decision will have to be made sometime in the near future. They are 13 and 14. Not sure I can still bring myself to be there either.

Had it done a few times...and it is humane.

Still hurts like shit, though..........

Our critters are our friends for life...........

Got one that I need to have put down but can't bring myself to do it yet. He's a 14 year old german shepard with bad hips. The sad part is I know he's in pain and I keep putting it off...

It's never easy on us.

6 out of 9 have crossed in my arms, 2 beyond my control, 1 (the first to the vet) I wasn't with...I still regret it.

Prayers sent to ALL.

i have two toy maltese's , even though they are very young ...i know one day i must face this. i do not see them as being dogs...they're cleaner than some humans i know...after reading this thread ...this has shown me that sometimes when i push them away from playing or wanting to lick me ....I WILL NO LONGER TAKE THIS FOR GRANTED!!! THANKYOU VTCOA MEMBERS....THIS HAS TRULY GIVEN ME A REALITY CHECK!!! PAMM

Rarely does the vet allow the owner to be around when the animal is actually euthanized.... When we stay with our little friends as they "go to sleep", that is usually exactly the case. The vet is putting them under anesthesia. When they take the animal in the back, that is usually when they are actually administered the fatal drugs.

The vast majority of Veterinarians are humane to a fault.... and they are very careful to make sure the animal is in no pain before euthanasia. It's a sad experience to be sure. But, death is a natural part of life.

have put my share of cats and dogs to sleep. last was my 10 year old cat (turned diabetic and insulin was not working) and a couple of dogs. but we have one of the best vets i have seen always a stand up guy. they all went really peacefully.

We were there when Charlie passed over. I held him tight as he took his last breath, just wishing there was something I could do to turn back time. :(

I don't think I could watch either of my Dog's go when the time comes. My wife had a cat years ago that developed kidney issues and I didn't think I was attached to him. But I'll admit it, I shed a tear or two when I said the final goodbye and they took him away.

we did last year our 14 year old lab, he was in poor health, had to do it, was one of the saddest times of my life, just like going to sleep for him

I like Bob was there When Shadow took his last breath, 13 years is a lifetime for a dog but a blink of the eye for us.

Thanks for the posts guys,

OMG i was driving to a job today and thinking of my dog and wishing she was with me. i though i never want her to die and i actually pictured myself laying down next to her as an old girl and hoping that day would never come. thanks for sharing and i think the best thing to do is get a puppy asap and always remember your best friend.
