Yes and no, the fast hwys are mostly toll roads and they are not cheap. Get off those and you can be stuck behind any slow car, truck, tractor etc. Parking is/can be non existent and is $$$. Most cities have massive traffic in and around them. Plan on lots of time to drive thru them...

Get a euro rail pass, trains go everywhere you can sleep if you want to and they have a bar car if you don't, If your gonna rent a car get something small and diesel, cheaper and remember you have to find the nonexistent parking in the cities. Amsterdam is a great start, don't stay too long...

Those few knick knacks better include an upgraded driveline, front TC, tranny etc. Otherwise he'll need them PDQ!

it seems like you already have a great choice, the Ram for fun and the Montero for a DD. The Jeep is great but gets the same or worse mileage than the Ram, you may want to wait for the 2012 SRT Jeep it will get the 6.4L and the interior is swanky!
