Are you talking about screwing a handle on top of the stock hurst stick? If so that would put the handle up way too high. I'm thinking about doing something like that on my daily driver Eclipse. You could talk to him though, he might be able to do something like that for you. Haven't seen...

Look on the first page a few posts down. A couple of pics of mine installed with the carbon fiber handle. It now has a hand carved solid oak grip installed. I did the carving myself. Stretch

Unless you are really banging second and third gears, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. My first one lasted over a year, almost two. You could take it out and look at the mounting area of the shifter, the area between the mounting hole and the edge of the shifter. Stretch
