15/50 Mobil one?

Whats up all! Question, Why do the high horsepower vipers use 15/50 or 15/40 vrs a 0w/40? I have the understanding that the first numbers are the oils viscosity when the oil is cold "15" and then when it reaches operating temps the higher numbers "40" or "50" are reached. Why, Why, Why.:dontknow: Maybe greater protection while starting, or able to kill it before reaching operating temps?:dontknow:

The hi-HP engines have greater internal clearance's. Using a high viscosity oil in an engine designed for a low viscosity oil can actually result in reduced oil flow and excess oil temp. If you surf around on the internet there are several sights that explain this in great detail.

Sounds like 15/50 is the way to go. I'll keep that in mind on the my next oil change.

i have been useing 15w 50 for two or three years now and it seems to make the tic tic sound not as bad..and we just turned 60k

I did use 15-50 Mobile 1 for years but am switching to 15-40 Chevron Delo.Yes it's diesel oil. B
But it has a very strong and long lasting chain of molecules.

When the EPA made the Mfgrs take the additives almost out of the oil it got bad and has a very short life additive life.
Hence the plasticisers turn back into plastic too soon.
Plasticisers are what make thin oil act like a heaver weight oil.

The wider the viscosity range the more additive it needs, and it breakes down very fast now.

15-50 is still good when it is fresh, but just does not last long enough.............

Good info, and nice to see some havin good luck with the 15/50. I checked out Mobil 1 website and looks like the 15/50 is great for racing engines, turbo, supercharged, high revin big horse power! Wow FSTJACK had some input talkin about the plasticisers! Good to know when runnin 15/50. Really need to pay attention to when that oil is startin to break down, like higher temps and loss of power.

15w50 should be a "summer" oil while 0w40 all weather, right?

considering I'm not willing to drive the truck in winter....

Unless you are FI or done some major internal I would stay with the 0-40 year round..

For 90K miles I've run 0-40 Mobile or on occasions its not available I'll purchase another Mobile product but make sure it is not "Energy Conserving" version. Mobile's Truck/SUV oil as well as High Mileage oils fall under those parameters. Oils marked Energy Conserving have the additional additives (and others) previously spoken about.
