I just installed my 170* t-stat and drove around a bit. The temp guage is all over the place, from 150ish to 240, but I couldn't get any heat in the cab with the selector all the way to HOT. Could this be a bad t-stat:dontknow: ? I really don't want to do that again.

thanks

240 is way too high, Is it moving around erratically?? Sounds like a bad stat!!

gets hot when sitting still or going slow, cools when the fan kicks on, heats back up under load. Never any heat in the cab. No leaks, refilled the coolant, fan is coming on, I even double checked to make sure I had the t-stat installed in the right direction.

GRRRRRRR!

did you use the bleeder on top to get rid of excess air? Put mine on Sunday and works great.

on top of the housing there is a lil nipple for bleeding the air out.

slowly open it when ideling until coolant comes outclose it back & rev it up sum and do it again.

I wondered what that was- I even thought I may have left a hose off!

Can you explain the process please?

I did this several times befor i started the engine, slowly added coolant til the bubbles stopped under the rad cap, turned the nip til fluid came out and repeated the process. once the fan came on under ideling i knew the stat should be open so i tweaked it sum more.
If stinker reads this he'll get a chubby!LOLOLOL

That was it. I got the system burped and all is well...Thanks again Greg and Red. Maybe someone should update the DIY section to mention that little tidbit, or am I just stupid:D

I never heard of having to bleed the cooling system before ---but I did notice the bleeder on the housing ----why is this system different than any other?

Our cooling system uses a different stat than 90 % of all others. It has a bypass which allows water to circulate through the motor. When the stat opens it closes the bypass and circulates the water through the radiator. Abubble of air will cool the sensor down and cause the system to read wrong.
