I am in the process of buying a 2004 but I have heard
that there were many clutch problems. These were corrected
in 2005 and the gearing was changed. Could any one confirm this?

Thanks,

Jim

This was posted on a different forum by SCVette:

"Dodge replaced my complete clutch under warranty at 1200 miles. The viper tech said that the best he could figure, the pressure plate was not torqued down correctly, which then warped. It warped so bad that the center release spring teeth that the through-out bearing push on, were half popped out from under the through-out bearing.
It happened pretty quickly one day and felt like the clutch fluid resivoir had air in it.
The clutch had worked great before and since the replacement, now with 2100 miles."

A couple of others on the forum said that it had a burning smell for the 1st 1000 or so miles but then it eventually stopped. But if you buying from a dealer, you can always have them check it out before purchase! Some of the better dealers (the rare) if they find it's a problem, they will repair it if you are truly interested. Again, it's rare!

04 has 4 10's and 05 06 has 4 56 gears. I am pretty sure the brakes are different as well on the 04. The best news on an 04...which I own is that when you insure it, it will be classified as a Ram 1500 not recognizing the Viper motor thus lowering your premium. I would chose the 04 due to the cost savings on a slightly older model and you could easily switch to the 4 56 gears.
Good luck

Yes, rearend gearing was changed.

2004: 4.10
2005-06: 4.56

Also, the 2004 has two-piston sliding calipers up front, while the 05 has 4-piston monoblock.

Beat me to it. But I will add: I own an 05, insured through Geico, and they classify it as a 1500.

This has been discussed before. My 06 is listed as a normal Ram. I checked up and down with my insurance person. If something happens I will be covered.

Did the same with state farm and it's just a 1500. Nick is like $180.00 a mouth.

The 4.56 gears are only on the QC's ...correct me if I'm wrong...

yea 4.10 only 04 no 04 Quad cabs. the truck was built to go fast . to beat the lightning at top speed . 155mph to the ford's 147. No tow rating either ! 05/06's got the tow rating and lowered gearing to facilitate pulling . i believe 7500 llb. pull capacity and the quad cabs got autos . regular cabs stayed 6 speed.

the '04's were an option & 5&6 was a model unto its own:rock:

the clutch prob was/is a plastic slave/throw out bearin. best update is to go with the Viper hydraulics:rock:

I own an 2004, insured through progressive , and they classify it as a Dodge ram srt 10. I was paying $494.00 a month but now i pay 257.00 still sucks

Switch your insurance agent. As for the 05 and 06, thats interesting. When I was looking to buy I thought I was told only the 04 was classified as a 1500....good to know I was wrong. On a different note I really need to switch to at least 4.56 soon as the 4.10's are starting to feel slow. I would have never believed it when I bought the truck but as everyone said, you get used to the way it feels and you end up wanting to go faster.

04 to 05 RC changes also included....knock sensor, brake calipers, drive shaft balancer, as previously mentioned rear gearing and by then Dodge remembered to start torquing the harmonic balancer bolt.

Is there a difference in sway bar diameter, retuned Bilstein shocks, lower control arm bushing(s) size and oil pan size between 04-05/06 models?

ya,when my 04 rc blew up,they said the flywheel was warped and caused the motor to go out. the clutch was toast too! had less than 10,000 miles on it too! I was pissed!

Good God, At highest, I was paying $380 every 6 months. The next time it was due, my insurance company dropped down to $286.

Of course I was in in 40's ,had it listed as a pleassure vechicle, and have multi-cars.

Thank you for the information. The 2004 I am interested in has 5600 miles
on it. Garage queen which is fine, but I have been told to change out all
of the fluids.

Or should I just wait for a low mile 2005?

Jim
