just kicking this out there, but does anyone have one for sale with SRW and a 6 speed? i am thinking of dumping the srt-10 for one, could almost be an even trade if i find a cummins in great shape.

Have you driven one before? The only reason I ask is because I had an 06 mega cummins with a 6 speed manual, it is way different from driving an SRT-10. Gears are spaced close together for towing, so you are always shifting with the relatively small rpm range of the cummins. Also have to shift fast to keep the turbo spooled, and the truck is slow even doing that. I finally sold mine due to these reasons, I would only buy another 6 speed manual cummins if I was towing 10k plus on a regular basis.

That's why they call it the "Handshaker". :D But, you're right, even shifting "2-4-6" it's pretty tedious. Better mileage on the highway tho. :)

And why would it be a straight up even trade? Wouldn't a cummins cost more in todays market?

LOL! :)

Actually, if you drive fast (80 mph) on the highway, the 6 speed gets terrible mileage due to the transmission gearing (even with the stock 3.73 gears, it would be worse with the 4.10's). The truck is running high rpms (2500-2600 if I remember right) with the manual versus about 2,000 with the auto at that speed. Anything above 2k rpm and the cummins fuel economy starts falling off quick.

The loss in interstate mileage started in 06 when Dodge changed from the NV5600 to the G56 manual tranny. Was supposedly easier to shift (non-handshaker) but and a very short overdrive. I had an 04.5 that got great mileage, the 06 I have now got terrible mileage until I put the 37" diameter Peterbuilt wheels and tires on. Both were 6 speeds.

Good info, I am thinking about a diesel in a year or so depending on the size of camper my future wife takes a liking too... :argh: :)

there is 100 rpms different in the older and the new style transmission@60 mph.i have both.one is my work truck the other is my personel.my 07 quad cab 2500 got 24.6 mpg on a 300 mile trip with the cruise set on 65.i got right at 22 on the way back running between 70 and 80 the whole way.it will get 20 running about as hard as anyone would want to.it is 100% stock other than a superchips flashpac set on mileage setting and a one size taller tire(effectively changing the gearing slightly).speedo and odometer readings are dead on via recalibration for tire size with the superchips.i average around 650 miles on a tank of fuel in my normal everyday driving with a little interstate driving.

cause your "working" RPM range is 1200 to 2500, all i can say is get the atuo, get it built and it will be the best truck you will ever own. the cummins will out work, out tow, out perform:rock: 03-04 are the best years for big power, and fall into a better emiisions class for 2010 smog
