Anybody see the proposed Bush budget for this year? Over $3 trillion, yes that is trillions. There is an expected 410 billion dollar deficit.

I haven't had time to look at all of this, just a few of the big points. Big cuts in Medicare and Medicaid. No increase in education spending, not even a raise for inflation.

21 billion to the energy department for nuclear weapons programs? Thought we were pretty much covered there already. Though I have to be honest, I'm not sure if this is for research/development/production or for maintenance of existing weapons.

Of course there will be big increases for Homeland Security, something like an 11% increase. Don't know the dollar amounts, but I would imagine that is huge.

35 billion is earmarked as an increase for the Pentagon, bringing the total to 515 billion for core programs. I'm fine with military spending, but I'm willing to bet that 35 billion could have been made up just by getting rid of unnecessary spending and waste (read corruption).

I really think that we need to increase money on education, without that we are destined to fall behind the world. Let's instead get rid of all the millions and billions spent on pork. Yeah right, but I guess I can dream.

I can't wait until I have the time to look at this more in depth, it amazes me how the government spends our money. If my kid spent money like that I would never give him a nickel.

ya military is not cheap! the attitude down there is alot different from Canada. we are lucky to have americans on our side and to our south.

Here's the thing, the military spending is $515B for core programs. The deficit is $410B, almost a wash there (in terms of the big picture, not that $100B is chump change).

Education is $60B, another drop in the bucket so to speak. Where the hell is the other $2.9B going to?

Just how much is the budget for Homeland Security? I know it's got to be huge, but again, where is that money going? In the aftermath of 9/11 the Temecula Border Patrol checkpoint has been closed for as long as I remember. It used to be open all the time, before we had a cabinet position for a Homeland Security Director.

The money is being pissed away and stolen for the most part. All across our government, by all the branches, at all levels, democrats and republicans, men and women. How else do you explain the fact that our soldiers are still getting shitty ammo and other supplies? (see the Green Beret thread)

This is why it is so important for people to get out and vote. Don't put up with the bullshit anymore. If your senator didn't do shit in his first term, vote him out. If he is sucking up to special interests, vote his ass out. If he is too busy to make it to the floor to vote, vote his ass out. It is up to us to get the message to them that we expect more. If we don't, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

So after saying all that I take it that you meant " THE U.S. GOVERNMENTS BUDGET" not George Bush's budget? Just think if a democrat gets in there, how much they will raise taxes to try and offset their SPECIAL programs and still have an increasing deficit.

Make no mistake, this is George Bush's budget or should I say proposed budget. This is his responsibility, no one elses.

And I am not making a statement about any one political party or politician, if you read what I wrote. They are all responsible to some degree, when it comes to adding pork, backroom deals, and flat out stealing.

Your statements here sort of lead back to the lessor of known evils argument, which I understand, but deep down inside of me there is that little piece that hopes we can elect qualified, honest people to take on the enormous job of efficiently running our government, no matter what party they come from. Call me a dreamer.

My whole point is that we need to get out and vote to make our voices heard. I don't care which party you vote for, myself, I don't vote party lines. I vote for whomever I believe to be the most qualified for the job. I'm not going to agree with any of them across the board of course, I believe that's impossible.

Why do we accept anything less than that in our politicians and leaders? Shouldn't we hold them to a higher standard than the guy mugging tourists in NYC? hehe If they can't or won't do the job they were elected to do, we should kick them out on their collective asses IMO.
