Can you pull straight back for your 5-6 shift? I've got to come out of 5th and over to the right (almost under reverse) and then back to 6th. Is this normal or do I have problems? Been like this since I've owned it so I don't know anything different. TIA

I think it is because of the centering springs, set up for the 3-4 shift, gotta give it a little extra nudge to go into 6th!!

I think we have a consensus. At least I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.

I guess I never really thought about it that much.

I know you have to apply pressure to the right, but it moves straight back.

Me too. Pull down and edge it over a smidge. When downshifting from sixth to fifth I sometimes wonder am I gonna hit reverse. Do we have a reverse lock out thingy in our trucks so you cant do that?

yes. You'd have to move the shifter all the way to the left, then back to get reverse.

We have an electronically controlled lock out. I know this for sure. My truck was sitting in the showroom when I first seen it. They rolled it out for my test drive and the first thing I noticed was the gauges were not working, including the speedometer. Ken said they sometimes pull some of the fuses while it's in the showroom. Well we continue on and get on the freeway. Went to shift to 5th and ground the hell out of reverse. Tried it again and did the same thing. Went back to the dealership and they reinstalled a couple fuses and everything worked fine, including the reverse lock out.

Yup, what john has said. Also, if you ever had the tranny out (or shifter of that reason), you can see the lockout solenoid. It simply locks out going up-right to reverse (or to the tranny it would be down-left). I have heard of them failing though...

You can actually test the Reverse lockout by slowly rolling forward and rocking the shifter from all the way to the left to as far right as it'll go right. You will notice the shifter wont go all the way to the right until you slow down under 2 or 3 mph. I feel this almost every time I back into my short driveway. I pull up then slow down before finding reverse and backing in, I seldom get it the first time cause I'm going a smidge over the lockout speed.

I guess that would explain why I sometimes find myself in fifth when I was trying for reverse. For instance, I'm rolling into a parking lot and am getting ready to back into a spot. If I'm not absolutely still, it won't let me into reverse. I think I'm in reverse but when I let out on the clutch, it eases forward. Gotta clutch it again and then it goes into reverse. Just one of those little idiosyncrasies.

After I turned my sifter backwards, 5 - 6 shifts got quite a bit easier. Bringing the knob closer makes it feel a little less like boat-rowing. 2 - 3 is still a little moment of hell every time.:D

I thought there was a thread where someones lock out failed at the track and it ended up trashing the motor....
