A shock between the rear-end and the frame?

I did notice on the 04 RC it had been lowered in the rear and also had a shock absorber between the top of the rear end housing to the frame just below the bed. The truck had no bumpsteer. Is that why?
 
The shock you're talking about is a hop damper and it's only found on the RC's. This is to prevent axle hop and help deal with spool up.

The model of the rear end on the RC's is: DANA 60-HD
The "HD" stands for Hop Damper (not Heavy Duty or Harley Davidson).
 
That hop dampener boggled the heck out of me too at first. But it IS normal for an RC no doubt.
