air filters - not the normal question guys

anyone familiar with the functionality (science) of automobile air filters tell me if a K&N filter will work properly with the air flowing through it backwards??

i can't think of an application where someone would be able to reverse a filter on the actual application and have the box seal correctly due to the design of the edge of the filter

i'm wanting to use a 5.7 hemi box for my fresh air intake and the drop in K&N filter will seal the box and the hood but the sir will be moving through the filter the wrong way.

i know house filters always have a directional arrow for air flow but i'm figuring that is so they can save money by not putting the same filtering capability on both sides of the filter.

when i had a K&N filter on my 6pak Charger the inside of the filter LOOKED identical to the outside but i never thought about "what if"

i'll get pics off y phone to show what i'm talking about in next post
 
It would probably work, but you would lose all the filtering surface area with the pleats facing the wrong direction
 
Looking at your photos, where will outside air be coming from with the Hemi airbox so far back?
Looks like a nice, neat, fabrication, but I'm thinking you will be restricting air supply back there.

Air is ducted from the hood scoop

The stock hemi box is that exact location just lower on the fender. The stock box has a curved inlet on the radiator sides of the box that goes into the passenger fender but that negates the purpose of the hood

Yes, but hopefully with attention to keeping it clean the filter itself will flow air both ways efficiently. I have an email to K&N but they won't get back to me until Tuesday so I was hoping that the brain trust here would be aeronautical specialists. ....... I was hoping to finish it this weekend

You can do a search by dimension search on the k&n website - might be another vehicle with same lxw but oriented different

thanks, i didn't see that section, gave me some more possibilities, i would just have to fab a frame to bridge the gap out to the hemi box if K&N says the filter has to flow one way only.

saw a video of their display with the ping pong ball and thought a parts store around might still have one on display. gonna call around today to see. then i can just flip the filter they use in the display and see what happens:D
 
Other than less surface area I don't see a problem. That would be with a round or oval filter. Flat panel should be the same flow. They are just cotton gauze between 2 screens. That holds the oil & dirt sticks to the oil.
 
It's not gonna matter on that filter. Any surface area or flow difference would be very minimal. Not enough to worry about.
