I do volunteer construction for Habitat for Humanity, and donate unneeded items from my houses to them.
Some people are not as fortunate as other, and would never be able to have their own house if it was not for organizations such as this or "Extreme Makeover". The difference between the two are Habitat for Humanity, the new owners have to also work on that house, plus put in so many hours afterwards on other projects.
Whenever I buy an old house to rent, and I go in update the kitchen and bathrooms, I just salvage all the items that are still servicable and take it to them to sell or put towards a house project. You get to write off the value on your taxes.
