ANY COMPUTER GURU's???

My laptop took a crap today and I know it's hard drive related...I had a new HD put in about a 1 year ago and it just broke the other day, so I decided to try install my old one....It worked for about a week and today it is saying unmountable boot volume....
My question is can I retrieve my info off the harddrive if I take it to a comp shop? I want my music, video's, contacts, document's ect...:dontknow:

Data retrieval services are all over , but they are pricey. When you get it fixed go to best buy and get an portable external hard drive backup, and mirror your OS and everthing else you want to keep, Then you will always be able to reinstall all your stuff and take it with you also.
 
you should be able to put the HD into slave mode, and plug it into another computer that has a man hd already ,, after it boots up you will see the 2nd hd ,, and you can grab files off it..
that typicaly works...
 
As well for future refrence, go to www.carbonite.com.. they will back up for you automaticly no hd necessary.. works great been using them for 3 years now.. and my pc have crashed many times.. saved me every time.

Seconded. You also might just have a corrupted MBR which is fixable..
 
computer is a 2003-2004 Its all f-d up...the mouse pad broke so i use a external mouse....i mainly used it for music and things like that.....sledge hammer was in my thoughts...
How would I put it in slave mode?
I'm def going to do a back-up this time...

The smaller ones run off of usb the larger ones will usually have a power
adaptor of some sort.. As far as running it in slave mode i must have
missed the part where the computer was a laptop.. There are a few
operating systems you can get that fit and boot from a tumb drive or
you can get a live cd and run that..

USB is most common for an external drive. Easiest thing to do is find a friend who is willing to help you out that has a PC you can mess with. Take out your HD and put it in the second slot (inside friends PC). Buy an external drive and and hook that up to the friends PC as well. Boot up windows and you will see your F'd up drive and also the external. Copy your data from the bad drive to the external. This is the easiest way to retrieve your data without going crazy techie.

I'm on a second laptop right now...It has vista so I never use it....It's an HP where is the extra slot that I could put the ould one?

Ok, I know this is going to sound really nuts, but it does work. Take your hard drive and put it in a plastic zip lock bag. Now put it in the freezer and let it sit for at least 24 hours.

Take it out, install it and fire it up. It should run and it will probably be the last time it does run, but now you can get your data to another storage device. Do not turn it off until you've gotten all your data because it will probably not ever run again.

Trust me, it does work. If we have someone come to us with a hard drive not working (spining up) it's the first thing we do and 80% of the time we can get the data off the drive.

That does sound a little crazy but somehow true.....the hard drive I have in now is my old one and it actually worked for about a week or 2....
I'm hoping if I freeze it, it will work again....because the newer of the 2 does not work at all...it makes a clicking sound when I put it in the computer:dontknow:
 
just take out the hard drive and put in in an external drive enclosure. Such as this one:

The enclosures include cables that will simply plug into any USB port and make it act just like a thumb drive. So, you can then copy your data to another computer or put a new hard drive into your laptop, install an OS, and then move the data over to the new drive from the old drive through the USB port.

Thanks didn't know they were so cheap....
Any recommendations for a good fair priced HD?
Also I have to install a new OS in the laptop or should that still be on there?

If you have a Fry's in your area, they will have the drive enclosures as well as replacement HD. Laptop HD's now days are between $50-$180, depending on capacity and speed. You will have to reinstall the OS from the original CD's that came with the laptop, but you won't have to buy another license. You will need to find the original license key and apply that after you reload the OS.
