Early Tuesday morning we are headed to the Dominican. My wife wants to take her I-phone to use as a I-pod but is worried about roaming and incoming messages, or whatever. Is there anyway that she can disable the phone/internet/text/whatever else that can cost roaming charges? She mentioned maybe airplane mode did this, anyone know for sure?

I would think airplane mode would kill the phone side of it. Put a call in to AT&T to make sure though.

is the clicks on the settings button there i an option for airplane mode that turns off the signal to the fone so she can then use it for music but will not receive any data which means she will not get any clls txt/calls/emails and will not be able to use the internet and any apps that are associated with the internet will also be temporally disabled

i just came back from San francisco and put my phone in airplane mode for the duration of my stay in the US. i was able to use the hotel and airport wifi that was free. still could use email but no text messaging was available. aslong as there is available wifi you should be able to use it. like a laptop . DON'T enable the 3G network!
