My Mom has been working on our family tree through Ancestry.com. She and her sisters had quite a bit done already (the old fashioned way).... But, this program has really opened up quite a bit of history for them. It's pretty amazing how far back it goes.

Just on my Mom's Dad's Father's (my Great, Great, Grandfather) side, it goes all the way back to the First Century AD! Apparently, the English/Saxons kept very good records. ..... It seems I have King Richard I's blood running through my veins. :dontknow: Pretty cool...

Ive seen the commercials about the site and checked the free part of it. How accurate is that thing? Name changes, mispellings through history, same last names, etc... seems like a scam after the first few family members to me.

Your probably right, after a couple family members its prolly all bull shit. Just to lure you in and spend more money.

I live in West Virginia, my family tree has no limbs.

It works as almost a peer-peer system. Once you put in names and other information, the system searches many different databases to find correlating info. It's as accurate as it can get, I suppose. It works off of census and public records.

Like I said, my family has gone back and done a lot of research in the past, the old fashioned way... that means physically going to search records by hand, going to cemeteries and researching records with sextons. We are fortunate that there are several generations of our family that has kept track. .... But, European countries seem to have a LOT more intricate records than the USA (due to the way they were taxed, and such). So, once we were able to get back to a few generations in Europe, the flood gates opened right up with info. Genealogy is a big thing in the UK, especially. Once you happen upon nobility (of any kind) from France or the UK, even just a few hundred years ago, you almost instantly have 1000 years of history right behind it. That's because they have traced it back and established it already. (..... and all the nobles intermarried back then... lol  )

..... On the other hand, one side of our family has a lot of American Native ancestry. It's next to impossible to find anything on them. We would probably have to still physically go to the reservation to find any documentation for them.

The Wife does a ton of it Jake. I won't tell you how far the lines go back, simply because everyone would say BS. My Mom's family has been doing genealogy for nearly 60 years. So there has been a lot of things done

Pretty cool when you look at some of the names in the tree, horrifying at other times

LOL... I know what you mean. I know Vlad The Impaler is in there somewhere... or some fella named Mudd. :D

We've done some in my family. I don't think anyone here would believe me if I told them some of the names in my family tree. Hell, I hardly believe it heheh. All the names that are recognizable all came from my Mom's side though. My Dad's side is mostly filled with soldiers, sailors, and convicts lol.

My family other than my wife, grandmother, mother in law, and pups is here, so jsut go thru the post and name the branches:)

my mom has been doing geneology for over 40 years. She also has our family-both sides- traced back to the 3rd century. She did it the old fashioned way and has travelled all over Europe researching. Apparently, we have direct lineage to William the Conqueror and the first king of Scotland. We also have an ancestor that was one of the judges during the Salem witch trials, and one who crossed Lake Champlain with Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. Fascinating stuff if you have the patience to dig it up.

Somewhere back a ways,we are related to Harriet Beecher Stowe !!!

My family tree includes moonshiners and gun runners.I really like the moonshiner side.

actually it works pretty well wife has been working on her side and mine and has made it a long ways back on both sides.

needless to say, i do find it interesting....

Yep, there is one in every family (a screw-up). :D Us "normal" folk that come from royal descent are usually the product of some family rivalry in earlier time... we were the loosing faction that was expelled from power. :dontknow: :(

Jack Daniel,s dad came from My home town and left for the US during a sort of Welsh prohibition:dontknow:

Welsh-American Whiskey!

Did you know that the ‘Evan Williams’ family distillery was originally located in Dale, Pembrokeshire! And that the family of Jasper Newton “Jackâ€￾ Daniel emigrated from Aberystwyth, Wales.

The Williams distillery opened in 1705, however the family later emigrated to the USA during the temperance period of the Welsh non-conformist church and helped found the Kentucky whiskey industry, a number of high quality bourbons are sold under the Evan Williams name to this day.
