Anyone have expericne with a BMW 545i or 550i... 2005 to 2007..

is the SMG the way to go over the Auto??? anyway looking for some input getting one for the gf.....

aparently they are 545i =345hp and 550i =360 hp ... any good mods for these to get up to srt8 hp ??

Well honeslty, I would not get one due to the numerous promblems you'll encounter with electronics(airbag, check engine, trans light). Also they have a tendency to cause really bad inner tire wear while the middle to outside tread looks great... But if your really set on getting one make sure you find a manual not smg trans... As far as the best year to get it would be the 550 in 07. Thats when they did away with airbag system that used fiberoptics for communication.. They really never got the software right for it so in 07 they went back to standard copper wire to connect all the airbag modules...If you really want me too I guess I could write down a list of all the common issues you would encounter.

As far as Srt 8 power....forget about it, just a waste of money with DINAN.

The SMG tranny does not have the best reputation. And I agree, get an SRT for less than the BMW if you want SRT power. BMW's are over priced and the reputation of BMW owners is that they are assholes. I chose Audi over BMW and I love the Audi.

Don't get the SMG trans... it SUCKS as a automatic and as a manual. :dontknow: If she can't drive stick, get her the automatic.

The new body-style 5-series are ugly, IMO.... and you will need a PhD for the I-Drive system. BMW has really gone off track from the "Ultimate Driving Machine" they once were.

08 550I 0 to 60 time is 5.0 sec. As far as I know, they don't make an SMG trans for it. I do have an 06 M3 with the SMG and love it. It is actually a manual trans that shifts electronically. You don't get the loss of horspower you would with a regular auto. Lastly, 08's have very few problems.

No offense intended. I am just stating the general opinion that is out there. The reasons I did not choose BMW were:
I don't like the interiors
They are over priced
Their auto and SMG trannies suck and I was not going to go manual
They have electrical problems
I AM an asshole and need to do anything I can to hide it

My neighbor paid over $80,000 for his BMW 650 CiC. I paid $30,000 for my Audi S4 vert. I drove his car and I like everything about my car better, especially the extra $50,000 in the bank! A used 650 still would've cost me $50k or more.

hey thanks for the input ive been to busy to reply... .. ya as for the bmw bit i cant get her off of that topic so gonna have to bite the bullet on one of them.. she has a 325i now and its a pos breaks down every 4k miles... but its 8 years old .. was wondering if the new ones were better at all.. .also ftruck what is the issues with the smg?? they brake down or just shitty in general?

Just shitty in general. :dontknow: I've had 8 BMW's and loved almost all of them. (Except: 530i "Touring" wagon, 318is 4 door....)..... My "M"s have been wonderful. I've had: '90 M5, '01 M3, '02M Roadster (conv. Z3 "M"), '02 M5, '88 M6 (should have kept this one, most of all. ), etc......... All the "///M" cars are THEE TOP of the food-chain for performance cars, IMO. :rock: You just have to get them pre-'07 and in a MANUAL. :dontknow: The new ones, I HATE to say, SUCK. :dontknow:

My next car...... If I can ever get rid of this damned TRUCK, is going to be a '00-'06 M3 Comp. (zhp) Coupe, w/ a 6-speed Man..... :rock: :rock: :rock: I miss my BMW's.

Anyway, good luck in your quest. There are many good BMW's out there........ If you're looking for a AUTO version of the BMW for your girl, you should drive a nice, used 330ci, 540I, or 545i w/ AUTO. I think she might like it (being used to a BMW). There isn't much else that can compare.......... Maybe a Mercedes.... But they are GARBAGE, IMO.

heard also problems with the auto X5.... and electrical shit...Myself had only good experiences...several 2002s ( of which one 4 years rally car ) ,320, then the most brilliant 528i .. man, what i did with that car , years long ...and there was NEVER a wrench on it... !, 318i ( for one of the sons ) , and now the 650...again brilliant , oke, new ...but a 5 year warranty contract ... we will see
had many other cars in the meanwhile , the only KING in SHIT was my Range Rover.....a damned nightmare. For pulling trailers i found the Toyo 100 the best car ... had 2 of them in the years and never a problem , even with a boottrailer of about 8000 lbs going several years to the south of France...
ever had 1 Mercedes... not my thing but wanted to try...within 1 year of new i already lost oil from the main bearing ... finito.
