I'm looking into a new ride for my Girl.... She LOVES the look of the 2002-04 M3. BUT, she doesn't want a stick. :( I would like to know impressions on the "SMG" (Sequential Manual Gearbox) they offer.

I haven't driven one, personally... But, it LOOKS to be the best option for us. Sarah can use the "Automatic" mode when she drives, and I can still have some fun when I go out on a cruise. :D ;)

If anyone owns one, or has driven a M3 w/ the SMG... Please post up and let me know what you think.

Thanks :)

A friend of mine has a 2004 M3 with SMG.
It is faster then the standard and blast to drive   I would get a 335 and chip it .... it will smoke a M3:D :D

Actually.... it's a 330ci (the coupe).... :D  ;) But, I know what you mean.... :D

Between me and my Pop, we've had 8 BMWs.... only 2 "M"s... The standard versions can be MONSTERS, with a little "Tweaking". :D :burnout:

Oh... The 335 must be a new model. Sorry about that... :p

I am just interested in the 2000-2003 model. I think BMW completely RUINED the design on the new ones. :(

335 stock is about 350 hp @ the crank it is twin turbo with only 9 psi good tune and exhaust and easy 400 and 400 :D :D :D also it is only 39K:dontknow:

I completely agree with you. I really can't stand any of the new designs. Although the 335 being that it is a coupe does look a little better.

I have a 2004 325Ci and absolutely love the styling. Ofcourse I have modified the style a little bit though.:D

I can't comment on the SMG other than I have heard both good and bad things about it. Check out bmwboard.com. They have a wealth of knowledge there.

They're small turbo's but they were put there more to improve gas milage than to make it a street racer.

Mr Black 1 Tell your Girl to get the New BMw 335 I twin turbo 39,000 out the door and faster than M3. And the Smg is pretty impressive rips through gears faster than Lightning. They do 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds right out of the Box:rock:

Yeah, but it looks like a KIA? :dontknow: :( :D

Thanks for all the advice. That new motor sounds impressive. I heard they put Bi-Turbos on the 5 series, but not the 3. :dontknow: :) Cool. :burnout:

We are looking to buy USED and not a new one. I can get a 330ci in the body style I like (2000-2004) for around $17K w/ automatic.... or a M3 Coupe w/ SMG for about $22-$27K. That's kinda where I want to be, price-wise. :)

As soon as I get home I will throw some up.

And you don't need back up the new cars speak for themselves.:D

I have driven a 2003 M3 with the SMG. I would buy it over the manual for sure. It's a great transmission. The car is brutal in general. It seems more race car than street car. If your chick wants a race car in street car clothes, the M3 with the SMG is the way to go. If she wants a civilized car that is also fast, I don't recommend the M3. You should drive one and you will see what I mean.

Thanks for the info.

Did you happen to try the "Automatic Mode" in the SMG? :dontknow: I think the Drivelogic is also used in "Auto". This means you can still set the firmness/quickness of the shifts. :dontknow:

Jake,

The SMG is pretty awesome. Go check one out, I think you'll both like it. (never played with shift firmness / shift tracking ine one tho)

GL brutha

I would recommending driving both the smg and stick versions, and probably a 330 sport or performance package before buying. The smg is pretty hard to drive smoothly - the clutch engagment is very abrupt, and the auto mode is terrible, they really didn't intend you to use it much. The M3 motor in general is pretty much the opposite of the SRT motor - all top end, no mid or bottom end at all; not really that much fun on the street unless you're revving the piss out of it(>5k rpm).
BTW, the new 335 is friggin awesome - torque from idle to redline, and probably the best automatic transmission I've ever driven. Far more enjoyable to drive than the E46 M3.
A 330 performance package or sport package might be your best option - sport package is just upgraded suspension/wheels/tires, performance package has different engine + transmission software that adds a few more ponies, plus Alcantra suede interior trim.
