Aquarium questions

Looks like a good one. That shape will only be suitable for small size fish so keep that in mind. The big fish need long aquariums.

Well, I figure this is our first tank anyway. We really need to keep it simple so we can try to keep them living hehe. How big can the fish be in a tank like this?
 
Bob, I have not kept up with this thread so I don't know if anyone already said this; you need to check for leaks. The only way to do this is to fill it with water and watch for leaks. I would suggest you do that before handing over your cash. Since it will have water, I would test the pump as well. One thing that can drive you nuts is a loud pump since it will be running non stop 24/7. Paying more for a quiet pump is well worth it so if you can score a quiet used one that is very good. At the very least it needs to have a nice solid hum and pump properly. Good luck!
 
That one will work for a silver dollar (literally and figuratively) or smaller. You will not want to get any extremely active fish even the size of a silver dollar. You have a pretty broad spectrum of fish within the small fish range. If you go to the pet store to get fish, the sign on the tank will tell you what size the fish will be and many times the minimum tank size needed for that fish.

Thanks for the advice Chris. I'll keep that in mind when I go check them out.

Silver dollar size fish, huh? I might need to go by a fish store before I decide on this one or not just to see what is available in that size range.
 
I used to be really proud of my fish raising abilities. My fish grew to be enormous. I had these two Red Pacu's that became impossible to keep in the tank because they were the size of frying pans and very active. They would splash water out of the tank regularly. I once bought feeder fish to feed to the Pacu's and my wife lost it when she saw the body parts floating. She made me save the last two feeder fish and they grew to be over 10"! These were tiny little gold fish under 1" long when I got them. Ah, old times.
 
I know the OL likes those goldfish looking things with the bugged out eyes hehe. Don't know what they are called. How would they do in a tank like this?

Those are the right size. Ugly as hell but the size is right.:elefant:
 
Sorry for responding late...

I think you can do a saltwater reef on the cheap, as long as you are patient, decide what kind of reef you want to keep and join a good reef club...California is basically one big freaking reef club...:D

If you want to maintain a nice budget tank, then you should stick with soft corals at first...This will show you the ropes and it will be a lot more forgiving when you make mistakes(Or your kids...:D :D :D )

I started my Reef with a 29 Gallon all in one tank...Had it for 2 years before I went to a 75 Gallon(1 year) and then to my 125(Got it for $75.00 thru Craiglist)...I moved my livestock every time I upgraded...

Here is a video of my 125 Gallon...It's a bit dirty cause I started to experiment with different nutrients but the corals are responding well...BTW the video is long...

i just set up a 49g tall center reef saltwater tank.....i graduated from african cichlids for 8 years. I miss my cichlids and will have another sic tank one day but learning the saltwater has been fun.....so far i have 5 blue chromis a niger trigger and a brown powder tank with about 40 lbs of live rock and the purple is coming out great. lots of coraline algea...im running a canister filter filled with filter floss and carbon. and a protein skimmer also have a heater gotta keep the temp at 78.
i cycled with live rock for about 30 days my ammonia spike and cycle hit on day 6 and cleared by day 10. fully cycled. now im going to be upgrading my lights for some corals i will be attempting. saltwater was not hard and the bigger the tank the better for salt as smaller tanks are harder to keep water conditions perfect. but i would not suggest doing salt for your 1st tank.

55g tank with hang on filter and canister filter with a good substrate like crushed coral or live sand. would be my idea of a good 1st tank.
