When you drill the crank and the balancer, let the drill bit do the work. No need to push really hard on the bit. I found it useful to use low speed with pulling the drill bit back out enough to make sure that the bit could evacuate the filings. Do this frequently. Be patient, it takes some time to drill it to the depth you need.
