:dito: Yeah, I think it would be virtually impossible to run into them. And even if they did, I doubt they would do any damage at all. Probably just bounce off and fall to the ground.

Next time you are at mach one in the H-3 Try it! :D

My truck is faster then my aircraft.

Oh I know. Remember I was an AW once, we used to fly circles (literally) around that dog.

I forgot where I heard this but I was skeptical as well, but stranger things have happened. Thought I would mention it for discussions sake or to be confirmed or denied. I was just on a SR-71 website and it said that some where fitted with air-to-air missles.

I really doubt that. I need to do a little research to find the temperature that the skin reached during flight, but if I remember right it reached a skin temp of around 800 to 1000 degrees. Titanium melts at 1800 degrees so I know it didn't get that hot.

Anyway, air to air missles have a lot of composite materials and light weight material in them so they would not have survived the heat generated within the normal flight envolope of the SR-71.

Here's the link: http://www.sr-71.org/blackbird/yf-12/ Says max speed of Mach 4. I think the plane would do Mach 3.2 reported. May have done better than that. The Mach 4 must be missle speed.

Here is what is said.

3 Hughes GAR-9/AIM-47A air-to-air radar-guided missile (max speed Mach 4)

I'm really surprised.

How many people know that there was also a drone? As far as I know the drone is still classified.

Maybe someone can prove me wrong on that one also.:D :p

the "drone" as it was called was used for gathering intelligence, etc. there is one on display along with the SR at Beale AFB, CA. Here is a tid bit of info as well, they would use two 455 cid engines to start each jet engine of the SR.

Bet that was REAL interesting at times;) :D

Yes I just got back from Skunk Works about a month ago... I have worked on sensors on the U-2 aircraft overseas at operational locations for 4 years and was as Skunk Works for a year doing some flight test stuff....

I have seen some pretty cool stuff out there....they are working on HUGE BLIMPS.....and they just unvailed thier new UAV "polecat".....plus some other neat and interesting stuff......

That was a fun video to make. You can even hear my kids in the background laughing as they were playing the hall while we were filming. What you don't notice is I had the 2 guys get on their knees while they were facing the desk to give me the right perspective for filming.
