Assume I don't have anything, and not much room in my garage for a lot of tools.

What basic tools should I have to maintain my 04 RC ?

After about 1500 miles of mostly short 10-50 mile weekend rides, I have put 3 quarts of oil in it.

After the last quart I noticed that the closest valve cover bolt was just barely threaded ( causing the oil leakage ?)

I also noticed I was missing a nut off of the exhaust header/shroud on the other side of the engine.

Are these things just working themselves loose ?

I think my first buys will be a torque wrench and a chilton's, but I really don't have much room for stuff, and would rather keep the complicated stuff to the pro's.

What is a good resource for torque ratings on these parts ?

You should be able to pick up a good basic Craftsman set with a box for not a whole lot of cash. No point in buying real cheap tools, they aren't worth a cent.

My valve-cover bolts worked themselves loose too. If you have a leak already, it might not be a bad idea to replace the valve-cover gaskets.... but they should be ok if you just torque them back to spec. :)

If you do a search (I will try to find it for you as well), you should be able to find the FULL DODGE repair book on this forum. Someone here had it and it was available to download (it's a BIG file). That is the book the actual dealer uses. ;) But, I would think a Haynes or Chilton's manual would be fine for trq-specs.

AGREED 100%!!! Cheap tools SUCK. ;)

Oh, and welcome to the forum! :congrats:

Well, shoot.... I don't think the site that hosted the service manual is up anymore. :( If you PM me your address, I will send you a copy on CD. :)

I missing one too.. rear passenger side. :dontknow:

The valve covers have an o-ring type gasket, no need to replace. The only tool you really need is a healthy VISA card.

Oil filter tool...

9/16 socket and ratchet for oil drain plug...

10mm wrench for negative battery terminal

Lots of Zaino

Lots of microfiber cloth

Spare rear tires...;)

Nice part of the tools Sears will replace tools for free if they break. I have also been looking for the 05 repair manual and found it not being online anymore.

SO I was cleaning up after losing my filler cap (...)and just noticed this below the lower left valve cover bolt, It looks like I have lost a bolt from my exhaust manifold ? Or is that just an unused threaded hole ?

A 14mm or 9/16 will fit the drain plug. Get 3/8 inch socket set with extensions and some universals. Some standard and metric open end/box wrenches wouldn't hurt either. A nice basic box set of bits with torx in it would not hurt either. If you are doing just basic maintenance to your truck that is all you really need. A filter wrench and drain pan for oil and you should be set.

P.S.

Get a new oil cap too.:D

What the hell is the oil drain pan for? No matter how careful I am with the filter it slips and falls into the drain pan and splashes old oil everywhere!

I need a lift bad.

You need to undue it by hand and hold onto the bottom and then put it in the pan.

The most useful piece of equipment that I have and I think is an absolute must have for any SRT owner is a $100 dollar bill printer. :)
