So I am driving to the office today when I see a guy hitchiking on the side of the road....not something you see alot of anymore in L.A....As I pass with every intention of not picking him up, I notice he is the guy that works the local Liquor Store/ Deli in my hood....

He has always seemed like a regular Joe and even talks Martial Arts with me from time to time when I pop in for a Gatoraid...What the hell...and for the 1st time in my life I pull over and pick up a hitcher...Guys seems a little down on his luck and doesn't even have a car....

We start talking and he mentions that he can't get a drivers license in the state of California...uhh ohh...I think here comes the story....drinking...drugs....killed the last 3 guys that picked him up and made dresses from their hides...

Well I bite..and ask why not...?....to which he replied that he is blind in his left eye and suffers from siezures....Okey Dokey....I bite some more....and ask were you born like this...?

No he says.....I was a young naval officer (special forces) and when the barracks got blown to hell in Beruit he was called in to be part of a sniper team that was to cover the area while Marines were busy pulling their own out of the rubble...and while doing this he got shot in the head by a 14 year old kid on an opposing roof....As my jaw fell into my lap he removed the hat that he always wears to reveal an amazing series of scars....

So my friends...practice random acts of kindness...you never know when you will be helping out a hero....

Needless to say he will never get passed up on the street by me....

See if he wants to the join the forum? so we can talk/chat to him:)

Good thread Nowwhat, it just goes to show ya, there are actually people out there down on there luck a little.
He is a hell uv a guy, tell him we are proud.

Familiar faces would be the only reason I would pick up someone, but it is sad and encouriging to hear of someone who is struggling to make it through without asking to have the world served on a plate. Humility is a characteristic I admire very much. God bless that hero!

Hey Mike,

What a great story and awesome occasion......

It has been said that "Many interract with angels unaware".

One never knows how much impact they can make on others.

Awesome post....

Great story Mike.

Reminds me that I have only three things to do today;
  1. Trust God
  2. Clean house
  3. Help others

Thats great Mike, please tell him I said thank you for serving our country.

Bill.

Thats a great story Mike..Good for you for deciding to give the guy a ride..I am finding that you just never know what someone's story may be.. People can surprise you..

Did you at least work him for some free bOOze?:p

Nah - That was nice of you to help him out, AFTER you recognized him. Sorry, but I would have a problem picking up a complete stranger in today's world.

I hereby award you 1 'Attaboy!:)

Unfortuneately, from what I've been told, it takes 10 'Attaboy's to make up for one 'Dumbsh!t', so all of us are probably in the hole...:dontknow:

Thank you Mike for being such a good person! - There is always someone out there who could use a little help and have a way worse story to tell than we do.

Everyone should do at least 7 good deeds per day and see how warm and fuzzy you will feel when you go nitey nite..... :D
