Be sure and cancel your credit cards before you die.

This is so priceless, and so easy to see happening, customer service being
what it is today.

Anyone who has dealt with an estate will agree with this.

A lady died this past January, and Citibank billed her for February and
March for their annual service charges on her credit card, and added late
fees and interest on the monthly charge.

The balance had been $0.00, now somewhere around $60.00.

A family member placed a call to Citibank.

Here is the exchange:

Family Member: "I am calling to tell you she died in January."

Citibank: "The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still
apply."

Family Member: "Maybe, you should turn it over to collections."

Citibank: "Since it is two months past due, it already has been."

Family Member: So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?"

Citibank: "Either report her account to frauds division or report her to the
credit bureau, maybe both!"

Family Member: "Do you think God will be mad at her?"
(I really liked this part!!!!)

Citibank: "Excuse me?"

Family Member: "Did you just get what I was telling you - the part about her
being dead?"

Citibank: "Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor."
(Duh!) Supervisor gets on the phone:

Family Member: "I'm calling to tell you, she died in January."

Citibank: "The account was never closed and late fees and charges still
apply."
(This must be a phrase taught by the bank!)

Family Member: "You mean you want to collect from her estate?"

Citibank:
(Stammer) "Are you her lawyer?"

Family Member: "No, I'm her great nephew."
(Lawyer info given)

Citibank: "Could you fax us a certificate of death?"

Family Member: "Sure."
(Fax number is given)

After they get the fax:
Citibank: "Our system just isn't setup for death. I don't know what more I
can do to help."

Family Member: "Well, if you figure it out, great! If not, you could just
keep billing her. I don't think she will care."

Citibank: "Well, the late fees and charges do still apply."
(What is wrong with these people?!?)

Family Member: "Would you like her new billing address?"

Citibank: "That might help."

Family Member: "Odessa Memorial Cemetery, Highway 129, Plot Number 69."

Citibank: "Sir, that's a cemetery!"

Family Member: "What do you do with dead people on your planet?

Well as long as we are talking about Credit Card companies I will get this off my furry chest.

When I went down to Bakersfield last year for the get together I used one of my credit cards for buying gas. Well on the way back I stopped at one place to get gas and it was denied. Denied? I knew it was not anywhere near the limit since it had had a zero balance for months. Anyway, I pull out another card by the same company and it was denied also. WTF??? Well I then used my debit card to pay for the gas and the cashier is looking at you like you some sort of criminal.

So I get home and call the company and ask what is going on. Well they say that if have anything that looks suspicious on your purchases that they lock the account. Again, WTF?

I guess to keep this short, you have contact the company and get their permission to go on a vacation and use their cards. I guess what really got me was they locked both accounts, not just the one I was using.

Okay, rant over.

Yea I learned this the hard way also. We went on a cruise a couple of years ago and I didn't tell my visa accounts that I was leaving the country. So they locked my account. Do you know how hard it is to buy a diamond ring with all your accounts locked? I could only use my ATM for the max of $2500. I didn't have any checks. What a pain in the ass.

Yes, it is a PITA. However, I would rather have them lock the account at the first sign of weird charges than to have to go through the trouble of cutting off the card and filing for fraudulent charges.

JMO

Oh! And yes! It has happened to me!

World Savings did this to me when I was in Vegas for SEMA this year and when I went to Bradenton. Getting a note from home to go anywhere, now must include a call to your bank, and credit card companys, it kinda pisses me off.
I thought they were there to be of service to me, not the other way around.

We are in the process of dealing with my parents estate and man is it a PITA. You would not believe the amount of paper you have to fill out for the IRA's, the Annuities, etc.... Lots of fed x ing and signature gauranteeing going on. And thank God we did cancel their credit cards before they passed, I could see that happening.

I like the part about giving their new address, at the cemetery!!! Thats great!!
