Blackeyed peas on New Years day

There is a reason many southerners eat blackeyed peas on New Years day. It is because during the civil war, the local farms were raided by the yankees who stole all the food, slaughtered their hogs and took the meat. The poor people were left with only the dried blackeyed peas and hog bones. They survived the winter on these.

I always wondered why my mother HAD to have a pot of rice and black-eyed-peas left on the stove until 3am New Years while I was growing up. :dontknow: Knowing her she just did it because her friends did so she wouldn't really offer such a great explaination like you just did.

My pleasure. The area i live in has a lot of civil war history and my wifes relatives were all victims of the war. Most people in those days, black or white, worked for a plantation owner and were dirt poor. Lots of stories of the old days that weren't that long ago. The only real difference was slaves were owned and couldn't leave if they chose to. Most whites were so poor they couldn't leave.

It's only 26 degrees here in Ohio with snow in the air but I just cooked up a couple of fillets on the grill outside. Needed some major BTUs to keep the temp up but it worked out fine. Yummy!!!!

dont forget the collard greens!!! they symbolize all the greenbacks you'll make throughout the year...i hate 'em, but mix in some jalepeno's and mmmmmgood...
