There is a reason many southerners eat blackeyed peas on New Years day. It is because during the civil war, the local farms were raided by the yankees who stole all the food, slaughtered their hogs and took the meat. The poor people were left with only the dried blackeyed peas and hog bones. They survived the winter on these.
